Lady Falcons come away with a 55-47 win over the Lady Bears and CV blasts Burroughs 73-43 in the boys game 

In the season home opener for the John Burroughs Bears basketball teams, the Lady Bears rough patch continued with a 55-47 loss to the Lady Falcons. Crescenta Valley continued its undefeated start to the season with a 73-43 win over Burroughs in the boys contest. Anik Nortikyan led the Lady Falcons with 30 points and Isabella Amayakyan led the Lady Bears with 22 points in the girls game. Dylan Shaghoian led CV with 42 points and Ethan Cooper led Burroughs with 14 points in the boys game. 

To begin the night the Crescenta Valley and Burroughs girls basketball game tipped off first. The Lady Falcons came off a 1-2 record at the Mark Keppel winter tournament, placing third in the tourney with a 64-66 loss to King Drew back on Saturday night. The Lady Bears began league play with a 60-20 win over Pasadena. This was the home opener for the Burroughs Lady Bears as the start of the season has not been kind to them. Burroughs began the season with a 1-2 record in Konawaena Tournament in Kona Hawaii and also went 1-3 in their four game road trip which included losses to non league opponents Santa Margarita, Bonita and St Bonaventure.

Anik Nortikyan and Isabella Amayakyan began the first quarter trading layups. Kelin Shajanian then nailed both of her foul shots to get the Lady Falcons up in front by two before Amayakyan tied the game at four with another layup. Nortikyan and Shajanian put CV up by four with back-to-back baskets. Amyakyan then closed the gap again with a two-point shot to make it a one score game again. 

Nortikyan continued her strong play as she pushed the Lady Falcon lead up to four again by recording both of her foul shots. Following a shot clock violation by the Lady Bears, Nortikyan made another basket to give the Lady Falcons a 12-6 lead. Crescenta Valley held momentum throughout the first quarter and led 19-14 over Burroughs entering the second quarter. 

Amayakyan began the second quarter with a three-point basket to get the Lady Bears within two in hopes of taking momentum from CV. Lelah Dunleavy went one-for-two at the foul line to get the Lady Falcon lead to three. Amayakyan converted both of her foul shots to get Burroughs to within one. Throughout the quarter, both teams displayed their offensive attitude and Crescenta Valley ended the first half with a four-point lead over Burroughs. 

Following a five second violation committed by the Lady Bears to start the third quarter, the Lady Falcons took control to open the second half by going on an 8-0 scoring run with points by Yashvi Ahir and Nortikyan. Nortikyan notably converted a three-point play at the foul line after making her basket while being fouled. Jessica Mena then ended the Lady Falcons scoring run with a layup to make the score 37-26. Crescenta Valley continued to pull away in the third quarter and led 42-29 entering the fourth quarter. 

Grace Barton started off the final quarter of play with a three-point basket in hopes of sparking a big rally for the Lady Bears. Nortikyan answered with another and-one basket while being fouled and she converted the three-point play at the foul line. Isabella Amayakyan and Barton scored consecutive points to cut the CV lead to eight but Yashvi Ahir struck back with a clutch three-point basket to push the lead back to 11 for the Lady Falcons. The Lady Bears never led in this contest as Crescenta Valley held on for a seven-point win over Burroughs. 

“It’s the hard work, dedication and a lot of effort that led to this win,” said Michael Flot. Flot also praised Nortikyan for her 30-point performance and called her an awesome player. 

“In the end we showed some aggressiveness but it was not enough to get the win.” said Vikki Oganyan. Oganyan also added that she wants the team to be more aggressive in getting rebounds which could potentially result in starting a win streak for the Lady Bears. 

Burroughs drops to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in Pacific League play and Crescenta Valley improves to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in Pacific League play.

Both teams will return to action on Thursday, December 18th as the Lady Burroughs Bears will take on the Lady Hoover Tornados at Hoover High School. The Lady Crescenta Valley Falcons will take on the Glendale Lady Nitros at Glendale High School. Both games are scheduled for 5:15 p.m. 

The Falcons and Bears boys basketball game clashed to concluded the night in prime time. This was the Burroughs boys basketball head coaching debut at home for Jason Weatherall. Burroughs came off a narrow 47-45 win over Carson at the LA Cathedral showcase while CV came off a 69-48 win over Verdugo Hills in the Northeast Valley Tournament championship game. 

Dylan Shaghoian and Ethan Cooper began the night by scoring three-point baskets to tie the game in the opening quarter. Jaxon Boghossian then nailed one from downtown to make it a 6-3 game. Shaghoian was fouled behind the arc and converted two of three shots at the foul line to give the Falcons an 8-3 lead. Evan Lanier got the Bears back within three with a tear drop basket. Crescenta Valley gained control of the game throughout the first quarter and led by eight heading into the second quarter. 

Nathan Rodriguez started the second quarter with a layup to make it an 18-12 game. Arman Bedrossian and Shaghoian converted their points at the foul line to increase the CV lead to nine. Arman Bedrosian, Garen Samuelian, and Shaghoian then combined to increase the Crescenta Valley lead to 16. The Falcons held Burroughs to only two points in the second quarter and entered halftime with a comfortable 17-point lead. 

Bedrosian and Ethan Cooper began the second half by trading baskets. Shaghoian followed that by nailing a three-point basket to increase the lead to 20 for Crescenta Valley. The Falcons went on cruise control throughout the second half to complete the 30-point win over the Bears. 

“The one thing that I challenge my guys with is to play together, our wins are gonna come from playing as a team, but I was proud with the way that the boys shared the ball which resulted in everyone doing their job at a high rate.” said DoVall Boykins. Boykins also added he’s leading Crescenta Valley Boys basketball in his own way after learning from Coach Shawin Zagarian for the past 18 years as an assistant coach under Zagarian. 

“A lot of what we are experiencing right now is that we have to keep learning how to play basketball the right way,” said Jason Weatherall. Weatherall also added that the team has to be committed to the process in learning new habits during the rebuild. 

Burroughs drops to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in Pacific League play with CV improving to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Thursday, December 18th with Burroughs taking on Hoover at Hoover High School. Crescenta Valley will take on Glendale at Glendale High School. Both games will take place at 6:45 p.m.
