Bulldogs become third team in the Pacific League to reach 10 wins 

The Burbank Bulldogs began the new year by blowing out Upland 73-33 behind Avo Papikyan’s 20 point game and became the third team in the Pacific League to reach 10 wins. The Bulldogs came off a 3-1 record at the Duarte/Temple City Tournament as they defeated Canyon 70-66 to take third place for the tourney. Upland, in their most recent contest, came off a 37-24 win over Westchester back on Tuesday, December 30th in the Desert Holiday Classic. 

Imani Young Smith jumpstarted the Bulldogs offense to begin the first quarter by scoring back-to-back points to give Burbank an early 3-0 lead. Jason Baker then got the Highlanders on the board with a tear drop basket to make it a one-point game. Following Jon Ong making one of two at the free throw line, Malik Mudie put Upland out in front by one with a three-point basket. Young Smith then scored consecutive points for the Bulldogs reestablishing their lead at 9-5. The Bulldogs continued their offensive avalanche throughout the opening quarter and led 36-17 heading into the second quarter. 

Avo Papikyan, Chris Ong and Giordan Lewis began the second quarter by helping the Bulldogs go on a 14-0 scoring run. Maleek Mudie scored a two-point basket to stop Burbank’s scoring run. The Bulldogs dominated the first half and entered the halftime break leading 36-17 over the Highlanders. 

Following halftime, Papikyan, Jon Ong and Anthony Jawiche sparked another scoring run for the Bulldogs, this one a 12-0 run to begin the third quarter. Max Rodriguez and Julian Mejia scored back-to-back points to stop the Bulldogs run. Burbank cruised through the second half to complete the 40-point win over Upland. 

Burbank improves to 10-4 and Upland drops to 8-9. Burbank will resume Pacific League with the Hoover Tornados on Wednesday, January 7th at 6:45 p.m. and Upland will take on Chino Hills to begin Baseline league play on Tuesday, January 6th at 6:30 p.m.
