Matteo Lopez and Seven Elkin’s second half goals propelled the Bears to a two point win over the Tornados



The Burroughs Bears were led to a 3-1 win over the Hoover Tornados through a pair of second half goals by Matteo Lopez and Seven Elkin. Both teams entered this Friday afternoon contest coming off a loss on Tuesday afternoon. Burroughs suffered a 5-0 loss to Crescenta Valley and Hoover suffered a heartbreaking 0-1 loss to Muir.



Elkin was a menace throughout the opening half, with five chances at goal, though he was not able to convert them. Elkin started quickly with the first opportunity coming in the second minute of play, and kept going with his other chances coming in the 11th, 24th, 26th and 33rd minutes of the first half. Eduard Haratyunyan missed an opportunity to put Hoover out in front in the third minute of play.


Garik Kotajian, however, was able to capitalize and put the Tornados on the board first in the 6th minute of play. Hoover held the lead for just 13 minutes before Justin Trigo tied the game in the 19th minute. Rafael Arakelian had a chance in the 35th minute of play which could have put Hoover back out in front, but ultimately the teams ended the first half tied at one.


Matteo Lopez scored a clutch go-ahead goal right out the gate, in the second minute of the second half, to put the Bears up 2-1. Elkin finally converted on his opportunities in the 23rd minute with an insurance goal to put Burroughs up 3-1 over Hoover.


Elkin had one more chance to add to the lead with a penalty kick in the 27th minute of play, but was unable to convert. Both teams played to the final whistle and the Bears held on for the 2-goal win over the Tornados.


Joseph Kaufman recorded four saves and allowed one goal in net for the Bears while Garni Babayan posted eight saves and allowed three goals for the Tornados.


Burroughs improves to 7-8-2 overall and 3-6-1 in Pacific League play with Hoover dropping to 1-14-0 overall and 0-9-0 in Pacific League play.

Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, January 27th. Hoover will host Burbank and Burroughs will take on Arcadia. Both of those games will take place at 3:45 p.m.
