Burroughs Bears sweeps Friday Night Basketball Doubleheader with Hoover Tornados

Lady Bears cruise by Lady Tornados 62-25 & Burroughs escapes with a one point win over Hoover by the final of 69-68 in the boys game

Nathan Rodriguez’s go ahead three point basket with 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter sealed a sweep for the John Burroughs Bears in their Friday night basketball doubleheader against the Herbert Hover Tornados. The Lady Bears came away with a convincing 62-25 win in the girls and the Bears escaped with a 69-68 win over the Tornados behind Rodriguez’s clutch shot.

Krrystal Villalta led the Lady bears with 13 points and Jenna Santiago led the Lady Tornados with 14 points in the girls contest. Elliot Lawrence led Burroughs with 17 points while Mark Khatchoyan led Hoover with 16 points in the boys game.

The girls contest between Hoover and Burroughs tipped off the doubleheader. The Lady Bears entered following a rough 74-51 loss to the Crescenta Valley Lady Falcons and the Lady Hoover Tornados suffered a narrow 42-37 loss to the Lady Muir Mustangs.

Burroughs began the opening quarter by going on a 10-0 scoring run as Grace Barton, Izzy Amoroso, and Gabriella Buendia began the offensive parade for the Lady Bears. Audrey Mateo got the Lady Tornados on the board by nailing both of her shots at the free-throw line.

Hoover committed two turnovers from shot clock violations and the Lady Bears capitalized each time. Burroughs headed into the second quarter with a 14-5 lead over the Lady Tornados.

Matteo and Natalie Sepulveda traded points for their respective teams to begin the second quarter. Matteo made a layup with Sepulveda nailed a three-point basket.

The Lady Bears controlled the second quarter and entered the halftime break with a commanding 32-8 lead over the Lady Tornados.

Following halftime, Matteo and Sepulveda again traded points to start the third quarter. Burroughs’ second half dominance propelled them to a 37-point victory over Hoover.

Burroughs improves to 14-8 overall and 8-2 in Pacific League play and Hoover drops to 1-13 overall and 0-10 in Pacific League play.

The Lady Bears will return to Pacific league action on Tuesday, January 27 at Arcadia, but will be competing in the Grant High School Girls Varsity Basketball Showcase this weekend. Hoover will host Burbank at 5:15 p.m.

The boys basketball contest between Hoover and Burroughs concluded the night in primetime in a Friday night thriller in favor of Burroughs.

Burroughs came off a 69-45 blowout loss to Crescenta Valley and Hoover had a dominating 85-33 win over future Rio Pacific League opponent, the Thurgood Marshall Eagles.

The Bears began the first quarter by going on a 5-0 scoring run with points by Kane Le Cabico, Justin Herrera, and Elliot Lawrence to jumpstart the offense.

Edward Gevorgyan and Ilan Genachte le bail scored on consecutive possessions to tie the score at five. Neither side had much of an advantage throughout the opening frame and Hoover ended the first quarter with a 16-15 lead.

Genachte le bail scored on three straight points to start the second quarter, increasing the Hoover lead to eight. Nathan Rodriguez went one for two at the foul line to get the Bears on the board in the second quarter.

At one point, Will Anderson, Kane Le Cabico, and Nico Meza recorded three straight buckets from three-point land for the Bears. Jeremy Aghakhani answered with a pair of free-throws to continue the see-saw battle between both teams in quarter two. Burroughs ended the first half with a four point lead.

Genachte le bail started the third quarter by going one for two at the foul line and Elliott Lawrence scored a basket to increase the Bears lead to five. Mark Khatchoyan kept the game within single digits when nailed a three point basket at the buzzer for Hoover, and the game went into the final quarter with Burroughs ahead 54-47.

Justin Herrera began the fourth quarter by nailing both of his foul shots to increase the Bears lead to nine in hopes of putting the game away.

The Tornados then went on a 11-0 scoring run with points by Edward Gevorgyan, Khatchoyan and Alex Patanyan to give Hoover the lead. Lawrence ended Hoover’s scoring run when he scored while being fouled and completed the three-point play at the line to give Burroughs a 59-58 lead.

Both teams continued to battle through the final buzzer. Gevorgyan converted a layup to give Hoover the lead with time running down. Rodriguez answered with a clutch three-point basket with 19 seconds left in regulation to give Burroughs a one-point lead.

The Tornados had one more chance to win the game as they had the ball for the final shot. Khatchoyan attempted a game-winning three at the buzzer but the shot would not fall. Burroughs survived with a one-point win over Hoover, 69-68.

“We showed a lot of fight, but we have to clean up on the silly turnovers which hurt us in the loss.” said Ryan Barseghian. Barseghian called Khatchoyan and Genachte le bail leaders when asked about them being the top two scorers in the loss.

“We had to figure out how to get some stops down the stretch, we had to change some defensive schemes in the fourth quarter.” said Jason Weatherall. Weatherall added that Nathan Rodriguez had a huge final quarter capped off by his clutch three-point shot with 19 seconds left in the game.

Burroughs improves to 8-15 overall and 3-7 in Pacific League play with Hoover falling to 7-16 overall and 1-9 in Pacific League play.

Both teams will return to action over the weekend. Hoover will host University Prep Value at 4:30 p.m. and Burroughs will take on South at the Heritage Christian Showcase at 2:00 p.m. Both games will be on Saturday, January 24.
