Host Lady Bulldogs comes away with a 64-52 win over the visiting Lady Bulldogs & Pasadena pounds Burbank 89-53 in boys contest


The Burbank Bulldogs basketball teams split their Tuesday evening doubleheader with the Pasadena Bulldogs. Both Burbank teams came into this contest looking to turn their fortunes around, having lost over the weekend.



The Lady Bulldogs won 64-52 over Pasadena and, in the boys contest, the Pasadena Bulldogs leveled the Burbank Bulldogs 89-53.


Ani Khachatryan led the host Lady Bulldogs with 17 points and Matea Miyake Trapp led the visiting Lady Bulldogs. Josh Irving was the go-to-guy for Pasadena with 23 points and Avo Papikyan paced the host Bulldogs with 10 points.



The girls game kicked off the evening and both teams immediately traded early baskets. Aparico nailed a three-point basket to give the hosts an early 3-0 lead and Trapp responded for the visiting Lady Bulldogs to make it a 3-2 game.


Ani Khachatryan hit back-to-back threes and Trapp stepped up again with consecutive buckets to cut the host Bulldog lead to two. Eventually Burbank took full control of the first quarter and led 18-13 heading into quarter two.



The hosts continued the momentum from the opening quarter and began the quarter two by going on a 15-0 scoring run with points by Natalie Megerchian, Yvette Soukiazian and Aparico. Collete Kiesel stopped Burbank’s scoring run with a basket, but Burbank continued on cruise and entered halftime with a 41-23 lead over Pasadena.



The Burbank Lady Bulldogs continued their dominance in the second half to eventually complete the 12-point win over the Pasadena Lady Bulldogs.



Burbank improves to 16-7 overall 5-3 in Pacific League play while Pasadena drops to 3-9 overall and 2-7 in Pacific League play.



The Burbank Lady Bulldogs remain in fourth place in the standings. Both teams will return to action on Friday, January 23rd. Burbank will host Muir and Pasadena will host Arcadia with tip off for both games scheduled for 5:15 p.m.



To conclude the night, the boys’ contest between Pasadena and Burbank played in primetime.



The visiting Bulldogs began the opening quarter by going on a 9-0 scoring run which started with a slam dunk by Derek Jordan. Tim Anderson and Parris Dikins also led the charge for Pasadena in that fast start.



Cris Ong got the host Bulldogs on the board by going one for two at the free throw line. Pasadena continued its first quarter rampage which resulted with the visiting Bulldogs leading by 14 heading into the second quarter.



Evan Washington, Derek Jordan and Dikins continued their offensive contributions in the start of the second quarter to increase the visiting Bulldog lead to 22.


Anthony Jawiche put the host Bulldogs on the board and Avo Papikyan added a three-pointer for the hosts to cut the deficit to 30-13.



Josh Irving then scored on two straight possessions for the visitors highlighted by a slam dunk alley oop. Pasadena continued to put Burbank away in the second quarter and led 48-21 at the halftime break.



Irving and Kaleb Walker traded points to start off the third quarter. Irving scored while being fouled, but was unable to complete the three-point play at the free-throw line and Walker went one for two at the line.


Irving also added two dunks in the third quarter. Pasadena continued to be on cruise control in the second half and completed the 36 point win over Burbank.


“Burbank is a very good team,” said Anthony Brooks, “we don’t have any misgivings on how good they are. When we came into this contest we knew that we had to be our very best.” Brooks also added they respect what the host Bulldogs do as a team along with praising the number of shooters that they have.


“We did not get a good start,” said Steve Eshleman. “Chasing a Pasadena team that’s great with size and physicality on both ends of the floor made it difficult for us.” Eshelman continued on and said that his team missed opportunities on both ends of the floor that could have kept it close, but it got out of hand right away.


Pasadena improves to 14-8 overall and 8-1 in Pacific League play which puts them one game back of the Arcadia Apaches for the top spot in the league. Burbank drops to 14-7 overall and 4-5 in Pacific League play.


Both teams will return to action on Friday night. Pasadena will take on Arcadia in a marquee Pacific League showdown which could have a major shakeup in the standings. Burbank will host Muir at the dog house. Both games will take place at 6:45 p.m.
