Lady Bulldogs defeat Lady Nitros 59-50 & Burbank wins 64-52 over Glendale in boys game

The Burbank Bulldogs Basketball teams swept their doubleheader against the Glendale Nitros on Monday night. Andrea Aparicio and Jolene Vartanian helped the Lady Bulldogs break away from a tight game in the third quarter en route to a nine-point win over the Lady Nitros, while the Bulldogs defeated Glendale 64-52 in the boys game.

Jolene Vartanian led the Lady Bulldogs with 25 points and Sophia Keshishyan led the Lady Nitros with 18 points. Anthony Jawiche and Kaleb Walker combined for 26 points for the Bulldogs while Dante Zakani led the Dynamiters with 18 points.

The Lady Bulldogs and Lady Nitros tipped off the first game of the doubleheader. Burbank entered following a 57-35 win over Muir with the Lady Dynamiters coming off a blowout 57-35 loss to the Crescenta Valley Lady Falcons.

Manina Tuputupu made back-to-back buckets to put the Lady Bulldogs up 4-1 following a game-opening free-throw from Sophia Keshishyan. Keshishyan closed the gap with a layup to put the Lady Nitros within one of the Lady Bulldogs. Both teams had a see-saw battle with Burbank leading 10-7 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter provided a lot of entertainment for both teams, and it began with Andrea Aparico going one for two at the foul line. Sophia Keshishyan scored two straight layups to tie the game at 11.

The back and forth battle continued and neither side was able to establish a clear advantage throughout the second quarter with the Lady Bulldogs leading 21-18 at halftime.

For the first part of the third quarter both teams continued to trade blows. Aparico and Jolene Vartanian finally gave the Lady Bulldogs momentum with their consecutive baskets, helping push the Burbank advantage to 11 points heading into the final quarter of play.

Both teams will return to action in the second of the back to back on Tuesday, January 27th. Burbank will take on Hoover and Glendale will travel to Pasadena. Both games will take place at 5:15 p.m.
