Burroughs splits basketball doubleheader with Muir

Lady Bears Cruise by the Lady Mustangs 62-23 and Muir defeats Burroughs 68-63 in the boys game

The John Burroughs Basketball teams split their basketball doubleheader with the Muir Mustangs on Saturday. The Lady Bears easily got the 62-23 win over the Lady Mustangs and Muir squeezed by Burroughs with a 68-63 win in the boys game. Grace Barton led the Lady Bears with 25 points and Jia Gray Gardner led the Lady Mustangs with 11 points in the girls game. Ellis Smith Clopton led Muir with 18 points in the boys contest.

The girls game between Burroughs and Muir began the doubleheader and Burroughs began the first quarter by going on an 8-0 scoring run with points from Jessica Mena and Grace Barton that jumpstarted the offense. Jia Gray Gardner got the Lady Mustangs on the board with a two-point bank shot. The Lady Bears led the entire time throughout the opening quarter and had a 14-5 advantage heading into the second quarter.

Burroughs began the second quarter with another offensive explosion as they went on an 11-0 scoring run. Mena and Barton continued to carry the Lady Bears offensively to start quarter two. Barton also nailed a three point basket before the half to help Burroughs settle with a comfortable 37-9 lead.

The Lady Bears continued their cruise control throughout the second half and completed the 39-point win over the Lady Mustangs.

Burroughs improves to 17-9 overall and 11-2 in Pacific League play and Muir drops to 10-15 overall and 2-11 in Pacific League play.

Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, February 3rd against their crosstown rivals.

Though Burroughs has locked up the #2 spot in league, their contest against Burbank will be an opportunity for them to enter the playoffs on a four-game winning streak.

The boys game between Muir and Burroughs concluded the doubleheader in primetime which was a thriller for both squads. The Mustangs came off a 75-31 loss to the Arcadia Apaches and Burroughs suffered a 76-65 loss to Glendale back on Thursday.

Elliott Lawrence and Ellis Smith Clopton both traded buckets to start the first quarter. Justin Herrera scored back-to-back baskets to get the Bears lead to four, but AJ Ball scored a layup to keep the deficit at two.

Teagen Bradford nailed both of his three point attempts in the first quarter, one of them resulted in an 11-4 game and the other was near the end of the quarter. Even so, it was a back and forth first quarter and Burroughs led by one heading into the second quarter.

Bradford and Ricky Ortiz hit three-point baskets for their respective teams to start the second quarter and the Bears and Mustangs entertained the crowd throughout.

Neither team was able to develop an advantage until the end of the half. Will Rowan nailed a late three to help Burroughs lead 33-27 at the half.

Ellis Smith Clopton began the second half with consecutive baskets to pull the Mustangs back within two, but Justin Herrera recorded a tip-in shot to make it a 35-31 game. Both teams continued their back-and-forth affair in the third quarter with Burroughs leading 52-48 heading into the final quarter.

Both teams never wavered down the stretch as this entertaining game gave the crowd an amazing ending. Muir was able to take the lead and held a three-point lead when a late Mustangs’ traveling violation gave the Bears possession of the ball with 14 seconds left in regulation with a chance to tie the game.

Ethan Cooper attempted a game-tying three that was blocked by Jacobi Law. Law turned defense into offense with a game sealing layup and Muir escaped with a five-point win.

Burroughs drops to 8-18 overall and 3-9 in Pacific League play and Muir improves to 5-20 overall and 3-10 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, February 3 with both teams playing against their crosstown rivals on the last day of the regular season.

Burroughs will host Burbank and Muir will take on Pasadena at Pasadena High School. Both games will take place at 6:45 p.m.

This next home game for Burroughs will include Senior Night festivities. The celebration of the seniors will be a joint one with the Bears boys and girls and will take place following the conclusion of the girls game between Burbank and Burroughs.

The seniors honored from the Lady Bears include Grace Barton, Valentina Morales, Alyssa Pracha, Gabrielle Buendia, and Violet Walker. The boys seniors are Ethan Cooper, Nathan Rodriguez, Cedric Valdez, Justin Herrera, Nico Meza, Evan Lanier, Elliott Lawrence, Weston Davis, Kane Le Cabico, and Teagen Bradford.
