Muir escapes with a 1-0 win over Burroughs

Mustangs move a game closer to a Pacific League title

The John Muir Mustangs held on for a 1-0 win over the Burroughs Bears to move one step closer to clinching the Pacific League title. Shelby Guelley provided the only offense for the Mustangs, scoring the game’s only goal in the first half.

Sydney Evans recorded two saves in net for the Bears along with allowing the one goal. Emily Goldorazena recorded five saves in goal, posting a shutout for the Mustangs. In their previous contests this past Thursday, Burroughs came off a dominating 13-0 win over Glendale and Muir came off a 1-0 win over Arcadia.

The Bears had multiple chances at goal throughout the first half as Isabeella Estrada, Samantha Sizemore, Margarita Varela, and Julia Barton all had their opportunities left wanting in that frame.

Estrada missed a chance in the second minute, Sizemore had scoring opportunities in the 12th and 38th minutes of play, Varela had two chances in the 15th and 19th minutes, with the latter being a headed shot at goal, and Barton was unable to convert her chance in the 32nd minute. Barton’s opportunity would have tied the game as Shelby Guelley got Muir on the board with a 20th minute goal. Muir held on to a one goal lead at the halftime break.

The Bears offensive struggles continued into the second half, even as both teams displayed strong defensive form. Varela had a goal chance in the 12th minute and Sizemore had a scoring opportunity in the 13th minute. Geneva Keifer also fell short on her scoring chances in the 18th and 27th minutes of play in the second half.

“What made it tough is that the girls played so well,” said Robert Sanchez. “We were in our attacking half for a significant amount of the match and had a ton of opportunities, but much like our other losses this season, one unfortunate event cost us dearly.” Sanchez noted that he’s confident that this team can bounce back on Tuesday against Burbank and that he feels good with where the team is at as he dismissed the idea of a regroup when asked about how he will get past the Muir loss.

Burroughs drops to 8-8-5 overall and 6-4-3 in Pacific League play with Muir improving to 17-2-4 overall and 9-0-3 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, February 3rd. Burroughs will play their crosstown rival Burbank at Kemp Kallem Field and Muir will host crosstown rival Pasadena. Both of those games will take place at 3:45 p.m.
