Bears looking to attempt at back to back League titles

The John Burroughs Bears are entering the 2026 season coming off an improbable 2025. The Bears defied preseason expectations by claiming their third consecutive Pacific League championship by finishing last season with a 21-7 overall and an 8-1 record in Pacific League play.

Last season the Bears got bounced out of the first round in the CIF Southern Section playoffs and lost 10-2 to Teesoro in the opening round of the postseason.

This Spring might not be considered as improbable, considering Burroughs is returning seven players, and all of them know what it takes to compete in a tough Pacific League. Among the key returners are five girls that made All Pacific League teams.

It starts with last year’s All Pacific League first team outfielder and all CIF Division three outfielder Karlee Earl, who is one of the headliners from this year’s senior group. Earl is also the only member of the Bears to have been a part of their three consecutive league titles.

Junior’s Sophie Rangsiyawong (returning All Pacific League second team shortstop), Ali Cortez (returning Pacific League Honorable Mention), and last year’s Pacific League pitcher of the year Valentina Reyes will all play huge roles as upperclassmen.

Sophomores Kalani Miramontes and Haven Vickers (returning all Pacific League second team outfielder) will also be key underclassmen for this Bears team this season.

Senior pitcher Hailey Franco will be committing to playing college softball at St. Joseph’s University in Brooklyn, New York. “I’m super excited about playing college softball next year,” she said. “But at the same I’m gonna have to get used to the winters there,” Franco also added that she had a blast playing girls flag football this past fall in addition to her playing softball this spring.

Head coach Doug Nicol is no stranger to Burroughs softball, as he’s entering his 12th season overall and his sixth season in his second stint as the head coach of the program. The coaching staff under Nicol will include head junior varsity coach Thomas Clemons, and added assistant coaches Daniella Morris Simokovic, Bella Orozco, Olivia Rosales and pitching coach Mia Storer.

Nicol’s staff will also feature returning assistant coaches, Sheila Oasay, Laban Freeman and Bill Dunaway. The coaching staff has a total of five Burroughs alumni on staff in Nicol, Clemons, Morris Simokovic, Storer and Freeman.

Morris Simokivic (JBHS class of 97) spent the last three seasons coaching with the Burbank High softball program before returning to her high school alma matter. Orozco also spent last season working with Burbank’s softball program before joining Nicol’s staff this season.

“To come into a new season is exciting,”  said Doug Nicol. “A lot of things that we did last year showed why this team never waivered, but it’s gonna be challenging to win back-to-back league titles.” Nicol also added that he’s excited to add Clemons and Morris Simkovic on his staff.

The Burroughs Bears will begin the 2026 season with a home game against La Canada at Gross Park at 3:45 p.m. The Bears will most likely return to Olive Park Field 3 for the South Pasadena Game on Tuesday, March 3 with first pitch scheduled for 3:45 p.m.

The Bears will begin Pacific League play on Tuesday, March 10 with a home contest against Glendale at 3:45 p.m. Another important date on the calendar will be Burroughs Senior Night on Thursday, April 16 against their crosstown rival Burbank Bulldogs with game time scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Burroughs will participate in the Hart Tournament beginning on Saturday February 21 and then again on Saturday, February 28th. Burroughs will play Camarillo on February 21 at 11:00 a.m along with an opponent to be determined at 3:00 p.m. Their Hart Tournament contests on February 28 will be determined at a later time.

The Bears will also be a part of the Woodbridge Dugard Tournament from March 21 through March 28. Burroughs will play a doubleheader with Irvine and an opponent to be determined on March 21 along with their March 23 game will be determined at a later time.

Burroughs will conclude the Woodbridge Dugard Tournament on Saturday, March 28 with a doubleheader against teams to be determined later.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
