Amaroso leads Burroughs to 54–39 win over Sacred Heart in CIF-SS Division 5 first round

Izzy Amoroso scored 21 points to lead the Bears in the win over the Comets

The John Burroughs Bears began the CIF Southern Section Division Five girls basketball playoffs with a bang as they came out with a convincing 54-39 win over the Sacred Heart of Jesus Comets behind Izzy Amoros’s 21 point performance.

Heading into the playoff opener, Burroughs came off a 79-39 win over cross town rival Burbank and Sacred Heart of Jesus blew out Pomona Catholic 62-14 last Tuesday. Milagros Barrera began the night by going one for two at the free throw line to give the Comets an early 1-0 lead.

Izzy Amoroso responded with a basket while being fouled to put Burroughs up 2-1. She was unable to convert the three point play at the free-throw line.

Isabella Amayakyan hit a three-point basket for a 5-1 lead for the Bears. Sacred Heart of Jesus and Burroughs were both locked in defensively in a low scoring first quarter with the Bears leading 10-8 heading into the second quarter.

Cynthia Najar tied the game at 10 to begin the second quarter. Both squads went neck and neck for the first part of the quarter until Valentia Morales, Amoroso and Jessica Mena helped the Bears build a 10-point lead at the halftime break.

Sofia Huerta began the third quarter with back-to-back baskets to cut the Bears lead to five, keeping the game close for the time being.

Amoroso responded with a layup to stop the Comets mini scoring run. Eventually Burroughs controlled the second half to pull away with the 15-point win over Sacred Heart of Jesus to move on to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division five playoffs.

“We played a great defensive game throughout the night and also showed great energy rebounding the ball and going on scoring runs when we needed it.” said Vicky Oganyan.

Oganyan added that she watched film on Sacred Heart of Jesus before the start of the playoffs and stated that the Comets were a challenging team to start playoffs.

Burroughs will host Culver City in round two of the CIF Southern Section Division Five girls basketball playoffs on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and Sacred Heart of Jesus’ season has officially come to a close.
