Isabella Amayakyan scores 22 points in the win for the Bears

The John Burroughs Bears, led by a 22-point performance from Isabella Amayakyan, defeated the Culver City Centaurs 51-23 on Saturday in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Girls Basketball playoffs. It was the second consecutive big win for the Bears following their opening round victory last Thursday night over Sacred Heart of Jesus, 54-39.

Lua Maghzi and Jessica Mena opened the scoring for their respective teams to tie the game at two. Amayakyan then scored while being fouled to set up a three-point play. She made the ensuing free throw to put Burroughs up 5-2.

Mena added a layup to put the Bears up 7-2. Beatrix Wada and Kennedy Saito scored consecutive points for the Centaurs to make it a one-score game.

Amayakyan then broke the game open when she scored on three straight possessions to push the Burroughs lead to 12-6 heading into the second quarter.

Amayakyan began the second quarter with a three-point basket and Rielle Waddell followed with a layup to put the Bears up 17-6.

Wada got Culver City on the board in the second quarter with a layup.

Makena Lohman nailed both of her foul shots at the free throw line to cut the Burroughs lead to seven. Eventually the Bears pulled away in the second quarter and headed into the halftime break with a comfortable 28-13 lead.

Makenna Lohmann and Isabella Amayakyan both scored for their respective teams to begin the second half. Lohmann recorded a layup and Amayakyan made a three-point basket to put the Lady Bears up 31-15.

Burroughs continued to control the one-sided affair with Culver City throughout the second half to seal their 28-point win to move on to the quarterfinals.

“We had another great defensive game which resulted in another quality win, the girls were locked in with their assignments and we also did a great job getting rebounds.” said Vicky Oganyan.

Oganyan also added that she had a great feeling about this win over Culver City following their morning walkthrough.

The Burroughs Lady Bears will go on the road to take on Carter in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night. Tip-off at Carter High School in Rialto, California is set for 7:00 p.m. with a trip to the semifinals on the line.

The winner of that quarterfinal game will play the winner of Oakwood and Whitney in the CIF Southern Section Girls Basketball Division Five Semifinals.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
