Alex Kazaryan seals the game with a game ending kill to give the Crusaders a four-set victory over the Bulldogs

In the season home opener for the Bulldogs, the Village Christian Crusaders survived a sometimes tense four set match against the Burbank Bulldogs (25-14, 23-25, 25-16, 25-23). Alex Kazaryan scored the match winning kill to give the Crusaders the two-point win in set four. In their previous contests, Burbank came off a five set loss to Castaic last Tuesday night and Village Christian came off a four set defeat to Crossroads last Wednesday afternoon.

The first set began with a back and forth affair for the two squads as Walton Salazar began the scoring with an ace for the Crusaders and Brandon Chong recorded a kill to tie the game at one. Both teams continued the entertaining start to the game until the Crusaders eventually pulled away in the first set. Danny Franco ended the first set with a kill to give Village Christian a 25-14 win over the Bulldogs.

Michael Becker began the second set with a kill with the Bulldogs taking an early 1-0 lead. The Crusaders got a free point to tie the score at one. It was a close contest throughout set two and the Bulldogs played well enough to come out with a 25-23 set win to tie the match at one set apiece.

The third set was just as tight, with neither side having an advantage larger than four points, until the Crusaders eventually took momentum on a Kazaryan kill for a 16-13 lead. Village Christian outscored Burbank 9-3 the rest of the way. Danny Franco recorded two kills to end set three to give the Crusaders a 25-16 win over the Bulldogs in set four.

Both teams had different questions heading into the fourth set with Village Christian looking to end it in four and Burbank hoping to force a fifth set. The Bulldogs at one point faced a 17-13 deficit and eventually clawed their way back into the contest with Chong tying the score at 21 with a big kill. Kazaryan and Walton Salazar both scored back to back points to help the Crusaders increase the lead to 23-21.

Village Christian was awarded a free point with the Bulldogs committing a players’ out of position violation, giving the Crusaders match point. Caiden Kai Abarabar scored a clutch block to put Burbank within one in hopes of forcing a fifth set. Kazaryan ended Burbank’s comeback chances with the match-ending kill to complete the four set win for the Crusaders.

Burbank falls to 0-2 and Village Christian improves to 1-1 on the season. The Crusaders return to action on Tuesday, February 24th with a home contest with Canyon at 5:15 p.m. and Burbank will take on La Canada on Wednesday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m.
