Bears six run bottom of the sixth inning propelled them to a seven run win over the Rams

In the season home opener for the John Burroughs Bears, they came away with a 12-5 victory over the Temple City Rams behind a six-run bottom of the sixth inning.

Zach Guevara drove home Thomas Martin with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to give Burroughs the lead.

Burroughs entered after a 4-0 loss to San Marino on Tuesday afternoon, while Temple City suffered a 4-3 loss to Cathedral.

Peyton Narvat began the night for Temple City with a leadoff single. Ryan Walsh worked out of trouble in the first inning by getting Nate Platon and Josh Jones on pop outs and striking out Tyler Womack looking.

Devon Cobb worked around a two-out walk to Devin Whittekiend by getting Jack Smith to fly out to centerfielder Brody Kelly, who made a sliding catch to take away an extra-base hit.

The Rams got on the board first when Brody Kelly reached on an error charged to Logan Drossin, allowing Nicholas Palomo to score. Andy Kobayashi grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Drossin and Elliott Ross recorded back-to-back two-out RBI singles to give Burroughs a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Temple City tied the game in the third when Platon scored on a wild pitch by Walsh.

Womack singled with two outs, and Joshua Cooper drove home Jones with a bases-loaded hit to give the Rams a 3-2 lead.

Walsh escaped further damage by striking out Palomo to end the inning. Cobb retired the Bears in order in the bottom half.

Jack Guest relieved Walsh and retired the side in order in the fourth. Martin was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom half, and Guevara laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him to second.

Kayson Montgomery tied the game at 3 with an RBI double. Drossin reached on a bunt single, but Ross flew out and Slater Mersola grounded out to end the inning with runners stranded.

Narvat led off the fifth with a double. Ryan Trebaol, pinch hitting, reached on an error charged to Guest, allowing Narvat to score and give Temple City a 4-3 lead.

Guest struck out Jones and Womack and got Cooper on a groundout to third baseman Logan Manolakis to end the inning.

The Bears responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Martin, Guevara and Montgomery drove in runs to regain the lead at 6-4.

Narvat later drew a bases-loaded walk to score Palomo and cut the deficit to one. Theo Gara helped Nathan Bartolo escape a bases-loaded jam as Jack Smith picked off Kelly at third and struck out Platon to end the inning.

Ross opened the sixth with a solo home run to right field. Burroughs followed with a six-run inning to pull away. Jake Rauenswider worked around a one-out walk to Gavin Huang by striking out Nathan Martinez and getting Palomo to ground out to end the game.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
