Luke Kang records the game winning kill to complete the sweep of the Lancers

The John Burroughs Bears continued their hot start to the season by sweeping the Thousand Oaks Lancers in three sets (25-22, 25-16, 25-20). Luke Kang had the match-point kill to seal the victory in set three. Both teams entered this contest following 3-0 sweeps, but on opposite ends. Thousand Oaks was swept by Cathedral, 3-0 in the first of the back-to-back and Burroughs came off a sweeping win over Monrovia on Tuesday evening.

Jack Szaras and Aiden Glass began the opening set with kills for their respective teams. Eli Panga then put the Lancers on top with a kill. The Bears eventually went on a 7-3 scoring run as Rhiley Brinton and Skyy Alston started the offensive parade.

Burroughs continued to have momentum throughout the first set with Gavin Etterbeek ending set one with a kill to give the Bears a 25-22 win over the Lancers heading into the second set.

In set two the Bears went on a 8-1 scoring run that was triggered by a block from Marco Santiago Dorn. Will Rowan and Alston also contributed to the scoring run.

Santiago Dorn also recorded a kill and then Devon Romo scored a service ace to make it an 8-1 game. Etterbeek ended the second set just like the first, with a kill, to give the Bears a 2-0 match lead heading into set three.

The Bears looked to carry their momentum into the third set to complete the sweep and the Lancers were looking to channel the good parts from their first set force a fourth.

Late in the set, with the Lancers trailing 19-13, Eli Penga kept hope alive with a clutch kill to make it a four-point game. That was as close as they would get and Kang ended Thousand Oak’s comeback chances with his kill to complete the sweep of the Lancers.

Burroughs improves to 6-2 and Thousand Oaks falls to 1-8 on the season. Burroughs’s next game will take place on Wednesday, March 4th against Chatsworth at 4:15 p.m Thousand Oaks will take part in the Canyon Country Tournament on Saturday with East Valley, Northridge Academy, and Hart in their pool play.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
