Burroughs ends seven-game win streak with a 5-2 loss to Sun Valley Poly

Fabian Bravo goes to distance by pitching a complete game

The John Burroughs Bears saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end in a 5-2 loss to the Poly Parrots behind Fabian Bravo’s complete game. Bravo allowed five hits, striking out one while allowing two runs, one unearned and one earned. Last Thursday, Burroughs came off a 9-0 win over Kennedy and Poly escaped with an 11-9 win over Sylmar.

The Bears got on the board with the game’s first run in the home half of the first inning as Devin Whittekiend scored from third base on a balk by Bravo. Whittekiend had reached base with a two-out triple.

Theo Gara retired the side in order in the top of the second inning after a rough top of the first inning where he had to work around traffic. Gara left Brian Marquez and Luis Cesena stranded on the bases after getting Luis Acuna on a fly out to end the top of the first inning.

The Bears and Parrots continued to hold each other in check until Poly got on the board with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Aidan Rivera, Evan Sandoval and Jacob Escalante recorded consecutive two-out RBI singles to put the Parrots up 3-1 over the Bears.

Poly added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Bravo drove in Luis Cesena on an RBI groundout for a 4-1 lead. Evan Sandoval drove in an insurance run for the Parrots in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI double to score pinch runner Diego Navarro from second base.

It was an uphill battle to get back into the game for the Bears and Logan Drossin tried to wake up the offense in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run to straightaway center field. Jack Smith had a golden chance to change the script of the game but ended up grounding into a six three double play to end the sixth inning.

Slater Mersola shifted from second base to the pitcher mound in the top of the seventh and retired the side in order to give the Bears one more chance for a dramatic come from behind win.

Jake Rauenswinder and Thomas Martin flew out and grounded out respectively to start the inning. Kayson Montgomery came to the plate with the Bears down to their final out. Montgomery kept the game alive with a two-out double, but Nate Sepulveda grounded out to Bravo to end the game.

Burroughs falls to 8-2 and Sun Valley Poly improves to 6-3. The Parrots will resume Valley Mission League play against Verdugo Hills on Monday, March 23rd at 3:30 p.m. and Burroughs will resume Pacific League on Tuesday, March 24th with a two-game series with Muir at 6:30 p.m. The first game of the series will be first responders night at the John Burroughs High School baseball field.
