Devin Whittekiend pitched a complete game shutout in the win over the Mustangs


On first responders night, the John Burroughs Bears shutout the John Muir Mustangs 6-0 behind Devin Whittekiend’s complete game shutout.


Whittekeind had a perfect game through 4.2 innings until it was broken up by Sonny Rodriguez with a two out base hit in the top of the fifth inning.



Muir came off a 13-0 win over Yeshiva University of Los Angeles back on St. Patricks Day and Burroughs suffered a rough 5-2 loss to Sun Valley Polly last Saturday Morning.


Prior to the first pitch Chris Montgomery, father of Bears pitcher and first basemen Kayson Montgomery threw out the ceremonial first pitch to his son. Montgomery is currently a retired member of the United States Marine Corps.



Members of the Burbank Fire and Police Departments were in attendance and were honored in between innings for their service and dedication to the local communities and for their hard work in keeping the people safe.


Devin Whittekiend started the top of the first inning by retiring the side in order. He also drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.


Whittekiend also scored the game’s second run when Jake Rauenswinder reached on an error charged to shortstop Cano Gianluca. On the mound, Whittekiend also retired the next 11 batters he faced.



In addition to his dominance on the mound, Whittekiend scored once again in the third inning. This time Rauenswinder drove him home with an RBI double to put the Bears up 3-0.



Whittekiend continued to do it all in the bottom of the fourth inning. Elliot Ross and Slater Mersola began the home half of the inning with a single and a walk respectively. Whittekeind followed with a monster three-run home run to put the Bears up 6-0.


Whittekiend began the top of the fifth inning by striking out Ezekiel Rodriguez and Will Rodriguez.


Sonny Rodriguez broke up the perfect game by hitting a two out single. Whittekiend struck out Jeaguer Martinez swinging to end the top of the fifth inning.


Both teams were held scoreless for the last three innings with the Burroughs Bears holding on to a six-run win over the Muir Mustangs.


Burroughs improves to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in Pacific League play and Muir falls to 3-6 overall and 0-6 in Pacific League play. The series will shift to John Muir High School in Pasadena on Friday, March 27th with first pitch scheduled for 3:45 p.m.
