Bears had three straight five run innings to propel them to a blowout win over the Tornados

The Burroughs Bears, fueled by three straight five-run innings to start the game, earned a mercy-rule victory over the Hoover Tornados 15-1 on Senior Night.

Devin Wittekiend pitched three perfect innings for the Bears with four strikeouts.

Whittekiend began the night with a quick first inning on the mound, retiring the Tornados in order. The Bears offense exploded in their half of the inning, with a five-run outburst highlighted by back to back RBIs by Whittekiend and Jack Smith.

Whittekiend went back to work in the top of the second inning and again retired the side in order. Burroughs had their second five-run inning as Slater Mersola, Whittekiend, Smith and Jake Rauenswinder contributed four straight RBIs.

Whittekiend concluded his evening on the mound with a clean top of the third. The Bears put up their third consecutive five spot in the bottom of the third inning to give them a 15-0 lead through three innings.

Entering the top of the fourth inning, Nathan Bartolo was looking to contribute on the mound for a combined perfect game with the rain slowly beginning to fall from the sky.

Kieran Sinta started the inning by drawing a walk, which ended the perfect game bid for the Bears pitching staff, but the no-hitter was still intact.

Alex Weimar ended the no hit bid by recording a one-out RBI double to put the Tornados on the board. Bartolo worked around the double by striking out Jacob Vangor and getting Jordan Mahler to line out to shortstop Elliott Ross to end the top of the fourth inning.

The Bears were held scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning as Theo Gara struck out looking, leaving Ryan Walsh stranded at second base. Mason Fournier entered to pitch the fifth inning for Burroughs and worked around a leadoff walk allowed to Jesse Carbonneau. Fournier induced an Owen Marks ground out to second baseman Logan Drossin and he struck out Adan Carillo and Colton Gibson to secure the win.

“The 2026 Burroughs Baseball senior class is a special group of young men, it might be my favorite group of seniors of all time and it’s very meaningful for me to see this group work their way up into the program and become superstars.” said Matt Magallon.

Magallon also added that he’s super proud of their growth throughout their four years of high school baseball.

Prior to the game 11 graduating seniors from the Burroughs Baseball Class of 2026 were honored and celebrated with their families and loved ones.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
