Burroughs sweeps Pasadena 3-0

Marco Santiago Dorn records 12 kills in the Bears win over the Bulldogs

The John Burroughs Bears easily swept the Pasadena Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon (25-14, 25-11, 25-19) behind Marco Santiago Dorn’s 12 kill performance.

The Bears defeated St. Francis in four sets and Pasadena came off a four set loss to Maranatha, with both contests coming the day before.

A sloppy start saw Anton Navarro give the Bears the first point of the game when he sent the opening serve out of bounds. Skyy Alston also served the ball out of bounds to tie the score at one, and give Pasadena service right back.

Burroughs broke the game open with kills from Alston, Gavin Etterbeek and Marco Santiago Dorn during a 9-4 scoring run. The Bears held the Bulldogs to 14 points in the first set. Gavin Etterbeek and Rhiley Brinton ended the opening set with back-to-back kills for a 25-14 win for Burroughs.

The second set started off similarly close, as the first, with points highlighted by offensive contributions from Greg Guzman, Noach Duffield and Qwentin Teasley-Hall.

Joseph Kauffman, Santiago Dorn and Brinton scored three straight points to give the Bears momentum. Burroughs then seemed to hit cruise control throughout and came away with a 25-11 set win behind Kaufman’s block to end the second set.

Pasadena was not about to concede the match just yet, and held a 5-point lead midway through the third set. The Bears overcame a 16-11 deficit with a 14-3 run to complete the sweep. Santiago Dorn, Will Rowan, and Devin Romo all chipped in with the offense to set up the match point at 24-18.

Gael Guzman kept the game alive with a huge block for the Bulldogs, but it was temporary reprieve. Alston scored the match-ending kill to complete the sweep over Pasadena.

Burroughs improves to 15-5 overall and 5-0 in Pacific League Play and Pasadena drops to 12-12 overall and 2-4 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Friday, April 3rd. Burroughs will take on Arcadia at 3:30 p.m. and Pasadena will take on Crescenta Valley at 3:45 p.m.
