On Friday afternoon, Jack Smith, Mason Fournier, Devin Whittekiend, Hailey Franco, Khloe Pavia, and Marco Santiago Dorn participated in the John Burroughs High School NCAA signing day to officially sign with the colleges of their choices.

Jack Smith

Currently playing his senior season on the John Burroughs Bears baseball team, Smith is taking his baseball career to the college level at LaVerne University next spring. Last season Smith along with his older brother Kyle Smith earned second team Pacific League Honors. Kyle currently plays college baseball at Whittier College. Jack Smith is a four-year member of the Burroughs Baseball Program. “I’m definitely excited about playing college baseball at LaVerne University next spring,” said Smith. Smith expressed optimism in playing against Mason Fournier and Cal Poly Pomona next season if the two schools were to play against each other.

Mason Fournier

Like Smith and Whittekiend, Mason Fournier is playing his final season on the Burroughs varsity baseball team. Fournier, who’s currently a two-year varsity player, is committing to playing college baseball at Cal Poly Pomona next spring. “I’m super excited about playing college baseball at Cal Poly Pomona next season,” said Fournier. “I enjoyed my time with the John Burroughs High School baseball program, especially playing with my fellow senior teammates Jack Smith and Devin Whittekiend.” Fournier also added that he’s ready to pitch at the college level next season when asked about his excitement about continuing to throw sidearm.

Devin Whittekiend

A young man wearing a Coppin State sweatshirt sits at a table decorated with blue and gold balloons, celebrating his commitment to play baseball at Coppin State University. The table displays plaques, a hat, and baseballs.

Devin Whittekiend is currently one of the best two-way players on the Burroughs baseball team and will be playing college baseball at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. “I’m excited about the opportunity of playing college baseball at Coppin State University as living on the east coast will be different from living on the west coast.” said Whittekiend. He also added that he grew up playing with Jack Smith and Mason Fournier when also asked about sharing senior night with his fellow senior teammates.

Khloe Pavia

A four-year member of the John Burroughs Bears girls volleyball program, Pavia will be moving to the next level in her volleyball career at UC Santa Cruz. Pavia this past season helped the Bears win a co-Pacific League championship and also earned Pacific League player of the year honors. “It’s awesome to see Khloe Pavia live out her volleyball dreams,” said Edwin Real. “It’s a culmination of her playing career at Burroughs.” Real also added that Pavia has been a great person on and off the court and called her one of the elite middle blockers in the area.

Hailey Franco

Currently playing her final season with the John Burroughs softball program, Hailey Franco will be playing college softball at St. Joseph’s University in Brooklyn, New York next spring. Franco, who’s currently a two-year varsity softball player at Burroughs played a role in the Bears winning the Pacific League title last season. This past fall Franco was part of the Burroughs inaugural girls flag football team as well. “I’m very excited about playing college softball on the east coast next spring,” said Franco. She added that the turnout of support from her friends and family was heartwarming.

Marco Santiago Dorn

Currently playing his final season on the Burroughs High School boys volleyball team, Marco Santiago Dorn will be playing college men’s volleyball at Lasell University in Massachusetts next season. Santiago Dorn played a role in last year’s team that won the Pacific League championship. “I’m excited to transition into college life, I think it’s a great opportunity for me to still balance athletics and academics into the next level of schooling.” said Santiago Dorn.

All six Burroughs college signees will be crossing the stage on graduation day on Thursday, May 28th.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
