Jack Smith drove home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning

The John Burroughs Bears made history against Arcadia with a 2-1 win on Friday night to complete the sweep of the season series over the Apaches for the first time since the 2015 season.

Jack Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, driving in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The win puts the Bears alone in first place in the Pacific League standings.

The teams also met last Tuesday, when Burroughs came out victorious with a 6-3 win over Arcadia. The Bears win in game one of the series snapped the Apaches 25-game win streak in Pacific League play.

On Friday, Arcadia opened the scoring in the top of the first inning on a one-out solo home run from Matthew Manzo that went over the scoreboard.

Kayson Montgomery minimized the damage in the top of the first inning, working around the home run he allowed and a one-out single to Damian Canto by getting Tyler Brereton to fly out to left field and striking out Aiden Soto swinging.

In the home half of the first inning Damian Canto worked around a one-out walk to Logan Drossin by getting Devin Whittekiend on a flyout to center and also getting Jack Smith on a groundout to short to end the top of the first inning.

Both teams stormed out of the dugout following the third as Jack Smith and Aiden Soto were mouthing at each other after Soto applied the tag at first. The skirmish luckily didn’t escalate into a brawl which could have resulted in ejections.

In the bottom of the third inning Logan Drossin tied the score at one with an RBI sacrifice fly driving home Zack Guevara. Kayson Montgomery and Damian Coto calmed things down on the mound, and held the offenses scoreless for innings four and five.

With the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jack Smith was hit by a pitch, bringing home pinch runner Logan Manolakis to put the Bears up 2-1 over the Apaches.

The Bears had a golden opportunity with the bases loaded to blow the game open. Burroughs was unable to capitalize. Jake Rauenswider struck out swinging for the first out. Thomas Martin flew out to left field and Logan Drossing was thrown out at home plate to complete the inning-ending double play.

The Apaches had an opportunity to put together a late rally in the top of the seventh inning. Juan Minaya began the inning with a single to represent the tying run at first. Johnny Gomez entered the game as the pinch runner. Joey Garcia pinch hit for the catcher Mavrick Silva and laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Gomez into scoring position at second base.

Evan Skinner grounded out to the shortstop Elliott Ross for the second out, with Garcia advancing to third base on the play, putting the tying run 90 feet away. Jordan Vogel flew out to center field to end the game.

“It was a great team win,” said Matt Magallon. “This team is not afraid of big games as we love the spotlight, we’ve held teams to only one run in wins along with walking people off and I’m proud of the guys for playing a part in the win.” Magallon also added that this Bears team deserved everything that came their way and have put in a lot of hard work so far this season.

Burroughs improves to 17-3 overall and 10-0 in Pacific League play and Arcadia drops to 13-9 overall and 8-2 in the Pacific League. The Bears are now four wins away from clinching an undefeated Pacific League season.

They will look to reduce the magic number when they begin a two game series with the Crescenta Valley Falcons on Tuesday night at Stengel Field with first pitch at 6:00 p.m.

Arcadia will begin a two game series with the Burbank Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon at Arcadia High School at 3:45 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
