Cole Richards gets out of the bases loaded jam to record the save for the Falcons

On a chilly Tuesday night at Casey Stengel Field, the Crescenta Valley Falcons escaped with a 3-2 win over the Burroughs Bears as Cole Richards got out of the bases loaded jam by striking out Jack Smith in the top of the seventh inning to earn the save.

In their previous contests, Burroughs came away with a thrilling 2-1 win over the Arcadia Apaches on Friday night and Crescenta Valley had a 5-0 win over La Serna at the South Hills Tournament back on Saturday morning.

Evan Campbell began the night in the top of the first inning by recovering from a one-out walk allowed to Logan Drossin by picking him off at first base and then getting Devin Whittekiend on a ground out to third.

The Falcons offense got going in the bottom of the first inning as Ryan Sebazian led off with a walk and Dante Cerecedes reached base with a bunt single. Whittekiend then struck out Cole Richards looking for the first out. Gunnar Herman got the Falcons on the board with a three-run home run to put Crescenta Valley up 3-0.

The Bears got their scoring going in the top of the third inning coming on back-to-back two-out RBI hits by Elliott Ross and Drossin. Whittekiend flew out to right field to end the top half of the third and left Drossin stranded at second base.

Both offenses were held in check over the next three innings. The Bears had one more chance at changing the game in the top of the seventh inning.

Following Theo Gara’s flyout to right field, Zack Guevara and Ross reached base with consecutive one-out walks. Drossin was hit by a pitch on his hand, loading the bases.

Nate Sepulveda entered the game at first base as the pinch runner to replace Drossin. Whittekiend and Jack Smith both struck out swinging to end the game.

“It was a good loss that we can learn from,” said Matt Magallon. “I felt like a lot of the guys learned from the poor at-bat quality from the game tonight but I hope that we can apply the things we could not get done tonight to help us get ready for Friday.” Magallon also added that Devin Whittekiend pitched an ok game even though he had his ups and downs throughout the outing.

“That’s two good teams that played great baseball all around,” said Bryan Rich. The interim Falcons coach also added that the pitchers from both teams came through and he also never thought that Gunnar Herman’s three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning would be the game winner.

The Falcons improve to 17-2 overall and 11-0 in Pacific League play which puts them in first place. The Bears fall to 17-4 overall and 10-1 in the Pacific League. The second game of the series on Friday night will solidify who controls their destiny in the hunt for the Pacific League title. That game will be at John Burroughs High School with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
