Burroughs sweeps Arcadia 3-0 to secure back to back Pacific League Championships

Bears get revenge on the Appaches

In a Pacific League title game showdown, The John Burroughs Bears not only got their revenge on the Arcadia Apaches with a sweeping victory (25-15, 25-20, 25-19), they secured back-to-back Pacific League titles. Both teams entered the contest 8-1 in league play.

The Apaches swept the Bears in their previous meeting on April 3rd, and later lost to the Crescenta Valley Falcons. Burroughs defeated the Falcons in a thrilling four-set battle last Thursday night, setting up this winner-take-all match.

Both teams started off the first set with no clear advantage in an entertaining back-and-forth showdown. Midway through the set, with the score tied 14-14, Skyy Alston recorded a kill to give Burroughs the lead.

The Bears scored 10 of the next 11 points with Noah Duffield registering three straight kills to help set up the game point for set one. Marco Santiago Dorn scored a kill to give the Bears the first set.

Jack Szaras and Gavin Etterbeek began set two with back-to-back points. The second set was tight throughout with Duffield breaking a 20-20 tie for the Bears. Burroughs scored the next 4 points as Noah Duffield scored back-to-back aces to seal the set.

With the Bears looking to complete the sweep, they began set three on a 7-0 scoring run engineered by a parade of points from Duffield, Jack Szaras, Etterbeek, and Santiago Dorn. Arcadia battled back to within three points at 19-16, but that was as close as they would get. Following Dylan Vong’s kill to keep the Apaches alive at 23-18, Etterbeek inched the Bears closer to their second straight Pacific League championship with a kill.

Burroughs committed a net violation to give Arcadia a point and an opportunity to respond. Gavin Ball hit the ball out of bounds to end the game, completing the Burroughs sweep of Arcadia and giving the Bears the Pacific League title.

“I’m really proud of the kids for their efforts in the win tonight,” said Joel Brinton. “Before the rematch with Arcadia we talked about the things we needed to improve on after getting swept by them in the first meeting.” Brinton also added that the team executed the game plan and that they trusted in each other to get this win.

Burroughs finishes the season with a 22-7 overall record and a 9-1 record in Pacific League play with Arcadia finishing in second place with a 33-5 overall record and a 8-2 record in Pacific League play. Both the Bears and Apaches will await their opening round contest of the CIF Southern Section boys volleyball playoffs when the brackets are released on Saturday, April 25.
