Burroughs walks it off with a 10-9 win over Crescenta Valley

Zack Guevara delivers in the bottom of the ninth with a game-winning opposite field single

The John Burroughs Bears not only earned the split of their two-game series with the Crescenta Valley Falcons on Friday, their 10-9 walk-off win put the two teams into a tie for first place in the Pacific League. Zack Guevara delivered as the hero with a game-winning opposite field single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Falcons squeezed out a 3-2 win over Burroughs in the series opener last Tuesday night at Stengel Field.

Kayson Montgomery got off to a great start to the game as he retired the side in order in the top of the first inning. The Bears offense got going quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Elliott Ross was hit by a pitch and Logan Drossin moved him over to second base with a sacrifice bunt.

Jack Smith drove in the game’s first run with a two-out RBI single to put Burroughs up 1-0. Jake Rauenswinder struck out looking to end the first inning.

The Falcons got on the board in top of the second inning with back-to-back two-out RBI singles from Michael Ducreux and Travis Phillips for a 2-1 lead. Kayson Mongtomery eventually got out of a bases loaded jam by getting Dante Cerecedes on a ground out to short for the third out.

Zack Guevara and Elliott Ross recorded consecutive RBI doubles in the bottom of the second to put the Bears up 4-2. Logan Drossin had an opportunity to add more runs on the board but he lined out to third base and Ross was out at second base to complete the double play to end the second inning.

Montgomery recovered from his rough second inning by retiring the side in order in the top of the third inning.

Thomas Martin recorded a two-out RBI driving home Devin Whittekiend on a fielding error charged to the second baseman Brock Robeson. Martin was caught stealing second to end the third inning.

The fourth inning was a slugfest as both sides put up multiple runs. The Falcons registered a seven-run top half which was highlighted by RBI doubles from Travis Phillips, Ryan Sebazian and Cole Richards.

The Bears responded with a four-run bottom of the fourth which was captivated by an RBI single by Elliott Ross, a sacrifice fly by Logan Drossin and a game tying two run double by Devin Whittekiend. Both teams were held scoreless for innings five and six with a tie score heading into the seventh inning.

Jake Rauenswinder retired the side in order in the top of the seventh inning to set up the Bears for another walk off win. Thomas Martin started the bottom of the seventh inning with a fly out to center. Slater Mersola reached base with a one-out single and then stole second base to move into scoring position.

Following Kasyon Montgomery’s ground out to third, Guevara delivered in the clutch with an opposite field single, driving home Mersola to send the Burroughs faithful home happy.

Burroughs improves to 18-4 overall and 11-1 in Pacific League play and CV drops to 17-3 overall and 11-1 in league play. Both teams will have a lot to play for in the final week of Pacific League play with the league title on the line.

Burroughs begins a two-game series with crosstown rival Burbank at Burbank High School. Crescenta Valley will begin a two-game series with the Arcadia Apaches at Arcadia High School. Both of those series will start on Tuesday night with the Burbank versus Burroughs game beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the Crescenta Valley-Arcadia game set for 7:00 p.m.
