Burroughs takes game one of the crosstown rival series 11-1 over Burbank

Bears are one win away from clinching their first Pacific League title since 2015

The John Burroughs Bears moved one step closer to clinching a Pacific League title when they defeated their crosstown rivals the Burbank Bulldogs 11-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Also on Tuesday, Crescenta Valley lost to Arcadia 14-5, putting the league title squarely within grasp of the Bears. If Burroughs can defeat Burbank again on Friday, they will claim the Pacific League title outright.

The Bears got the offense going early, putting up the game’s first three runs in the top of the first inning. Thomas Martin and Slater Mersola drove in runs to start the game. The Bulldogs offense was held in check in the bottom of the first inning as Devin Whittekiend retired the side in order to begin the night.

Burroughs added two more runs in the top of the third inning. Martin reached first base on a fielding error charged to Brandon Hernandez, scoring Jake Rauenswinder. Kayson Montgomery drove in a run on a bases loaded walk plus Zack Guevara recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to left field.

Whittekiend continued his dominance on the mound, getting through three no-hit innings. Martin reached base on a fielding error charged to Andru Machado, with Logan Drossin scoring to give the Bears a 6-0 lead. Thomas Angel broke up the no hitter by hitting a solo home run to put the Bulldogs on the board.

The Bears added three runs in the top of the fifth inning as Logan Drossin drove in two with an RBI double and Whittekind drove in a run on an RBI ground out to the pitcher Luca Kuiper.

Following Drossin’s two run double that scored Kayson Montgomery and Elliot Ross, Bob Hart was tossed from the game for arguing the safe call at home plate where Elliott Ross collided with Mason Schwartz.

Hart will serve a suspension as a result of the ejection. Whittekiend worked around hitting Geo Grair with a pitch by striking out Anthony Sanchez and Mason Schwartz swinging before getting Ezekiel Canto on a ground out to end the fifth inning.

Brady Powers drove in Logan Drossin in the seventh inning when he hit into a force out at second base. Jack Guest completed the two-inning save to help the Bears complete the 11-1 win over the Bulldogs.

“It was a great effort and a quality team win that I’m proud of.” said Matt Magallon. Magallon also praised Jack Guest for closing it out with a two inning save.

“Our team did an outstanding job of playing together and I’m proud of the way they carried themselves throughout the night,” said Craig Sherwood.

Sherwood also added that Bob Hart was fighting for his players, when asked about his fifth inning ejection. He also added that the rule when trying to score at home plate is to slide or avoid contact, and Ross collided with the catcher at home plate. Sherwood served as head coach for the remainder of the game and will serve in Hart’s role for Friday’s series finale against Burroughs.

Prior to the first pitch, The Burbank High School baseball program paid tribute to their six graduating seniors in Thomas Angel, Andru Machado, Julian Recinos, Jeremy Lee (Team Captain) and Ryland LeClair.

 “All the seniors on this year’s team followed Coach Hart’s vision of giving it your all and making each day count.” said Ryland LeClair.

LeClair also added that the six seniors on the Bulldogs baseball program are like his brothers when reflected on playing with them for all four years in High School baseball.

Burroughs improves to 19-4 overall and 12-1 in Pacific League play and Burbank falls to 3-14-1 overall and 3-9-1 in Pacific League play. The teams will play again on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at John Burroughs High School.
