Chargers nine run top of the second inning propelled them to an opening round victory over the Bears

The Dos Pueblos Chargers began the CIF Southern Section Division Three Baseball playoffs with a bang as they came out on top with a 14-8 win over the John Burroughs Bears on Friday, May 15.  Nick Salcido’s second inning grand slam helped propel the Chargers.

The first inning was kind to the Bears as they started the game off right. Devin Whittekiend worked around a two-out walk to Evan Bean by getting Marcus Carbajal on a ground out to short to end the top half of the inning. The Bears struck first in the bottom half of the inning as Whittekiend blasted a two-run homer to give the Bears an early 2-0 lead.

The Chargers bats exploded with a nine-run top of the second inning, highlighted by Salcido’s grand slam which broke the game open. The Bears offense put up one run in the bottom of the second inning when Kayson Montgomery recorded a bunt that scored Thomas Martin from second base on an error charged to Salcido.

Marcus Carbajal took Jack Guest deep with a solo home run to give Dos Pueblos a 10-3 lead in the fourth. The Bears trimmed the Charger lead to five with back to back RBI doubles by Montgomery and Zack Guevara.

The Chargers added four more runs for a 14-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning with two RBI apiece from Spencer Holtz and Mattias De Maggio. Burroughs failed to score in the bottom of the sixth inning as they were unable to take advantage of Logan Drossin’s double to start the inning. Whittekiend, Jack Smith and Jake Rauenswinder left Drossin stranded at second.

The Bears put up three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep hope alive. Guevara drove home Martin with an infield single, Ross hit a sacrifice fly to center field driving in Slater Mersola and Drossin brought home Logan Manolakis with an RBI single. Whittekiend was unable to keep the Bears season alive when he struck out swinging to end the game.

Dos Pueblos moves on to round two of the CIF Southern Section Division Three baseball playoffs to take on Edison on Tuesday, May 19th at 3:15 p.m. at Edison High School. The John Burroughs Bears season has officially come to a close and will return to the baseball field in 2027.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
