Valentina Reyes goes to distance in the Bears victory over the Hawks

The John Burroughs Bears defeated the Hart Hawks 6-1 to begin their CIF Southern Section Division Four Softball Playoffs on Thursday afternoon. Valentina Reyes limited the Hawks to one run as she went the distance in the win.

These teams played each other to end the regular season last Wednesday with Hart escaping with an 8-6 win over Burroughs, giving the Bears a five-game losing streak to end the season.

Reyes began the game by retiring the side in order in the top half of the first inning. The Bears scored the opening two runs in the home half of the first inning as Chloe Zavala hit a two-run RBI double to drive home Sophie Rangsiyawong and Haven Vickers.

Reyes worked around a leadoff single to Hannah Cook in the top of the second inning, getting Gabby Kobliska on a ground out, striking out Eden Carrera swinging and forcing Mackenzie Druez to ground out to first.

Vickers extended the Bears lead with a two-run RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead. The Hawks got on the board in the top of the fifth inning as Jessica Gutierrez drove in Eden Carrera with an RBI groundout to Reyes.

Sophie Rangsiywaong provided more insurance with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Bears a 6-1 lead. Reyes worked around back-to-back two-out infield singles by getting Kaylin Dodson on a ground out to end the game.

“It was a totally different mindset that the girls had in the win over Hart to start the CIF Playoffs,” said Doug Nicol. “We sat down Monday on what our game plan was gonna be from the jump as we challenged our girls throughout practice and it paid off.” Nicol also added that he was proud of the girls in executing the game plan in the win over Hart.

Burroughs will take on Rosary Academy on Monday, May 18th down in Anaheim with the opening pitch scheduled for 3:15 p.m. The Hart Hawks season has officially come to a close.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
