Mirzaian becomes the first woman to lead the Burbank Bulldogs girls basketball team

A new voice will be leading the Lady Burbank Bulldogs, as Alex Mirzaian takes over as the next head coach of the Burbank High School girl’s basketball program, replacing Kris Jabourian who stepped down after last season to spend time with family and friends. Mirzaian becomes the first woman to lead the Burbank Lady Bulldogs basketball program in the over 30-year history of the girls’ program. A former basketball player, she played high school basketball at Crescenta Valley High School from 2008-2012 and Glendale Community College from 2012-2013. Mirzian served as the Cal State Northridge women’s basketball manager for 1 season. 

Mirzaian’s coaching staff will feature Armen Nazaryan and Natalie Setaghian. Nazarian will serve as the program’s Junior Varsity Head Coach while Setagian will serve as both varsity and junior varsity assistant coach. Setaghian and Nazaryan are holdovers from last year’s coaching staff under Jabourian. 

“Alexa Mirzaian comes in with a lot of basketball experience; she coaches AAU basketball and is well-known in the community and wants to be here long term,” said Burbank High Athletic Director Allison McKain. McKain stated that she and coach Mirzaian had conversations about having 3 levels of the program which could include a frosh team in addition to varsity and junior varsity. 

“I’m extremely excited to take on this position as Head Coach of the Burbank Bulldogs Girls basketball program and see what the girls will do,” said new Lady Bulldogs Coach Mirazian. She also stated that this team will be strong on both sides of the ball and said that the offense helps win games but the defense wins championships. 

The Lady Bulldogs will spend the entire summer practicing for the upcoming season and participate in summer league games before school begins on August 12th. They will begin the 2024-2025 season with 2 road games with Mesrobian on Monday, November 18th, and Castaic on Thursday, November 21st before playing Mesrobain for their home opener on Monday, November 25th.
