Bears extend their losing streak to two games
The Crescenta Valley Falcons swept another game as they beat the John Burroughs Bears with another 3-0 victory following their sweeping victory over Pasadena on Tuesday. The Bears extended their losing streak to two games following their sweeping loss to Glendale the same day.
Addelyn Lopez recorded the match-ending block to give the Falcons the first set victory by the final of 25-13, but the Bears began the second set with a 5-1 scoring run with points by Khloe Pavia, Amila Walsh, and Narissa Wareebor. The Falcons closed the gap by overcoming the 5-1 deficit to tie the score at five with a kill by Isabel Hartaryan. Harytaryan also recorded a block to give the Falcons a one-point lead. Then Savannah Lay scored three straight aces along with Khloe Pavia’s block to get Burroughs back in front before Lopez and Hayden Shirvian both made life hard for the Bears. Hayden Pinto and Shirivian both recorded kills to help the Falcons propel to a second-set victory by the final of 25-22.
The Bears were looking for answers to force a fourth set, but those hopes were dashed when the Falcons started off the third set with a 9-0 scoring run with Hartaryan, Megan Bashar, Hayden Shirvian, and Sofia Shin contributing to the scoring run. Zoe Davis ended the Falcons’ 9-0 scoring run with a kill to give Burroughs their first points on the board in the third set. Crescenta Valley continued to pull away in the set with kills by Adelyn Lopez, Zowie Telm, and Casandra Lim helping the Falcons complete the three-game sweep of the Bears.
“We’ve had great practices where the girls were focussed and it carried into today,” said Falcons coach Matt Simons. “I was more proud of the second set victory than the first one because we were not on the top of our game in the second set. Simons added that Haytaryan had a great game in the win and mentioned that no one works harder than she does.
“I thought we played well at times and didn’t. We had trouble with the mental battle,” said Bears coach Edwin Real. Real said that Khloe Pavia played well despite the loss, but admitted that it was hard for the team to give her the ball often throughout the contest.
Burroughs drops their record to 6-7 overall and 1-3 overall while Crescenta Valley improves to 21-6-2 overall and 4-0 in Pacific League play to move into first place alone. Burroughs will return to action on Monday, September 30, with a road match at Providence High School at 3:45 p.m. They then return home on Tuesday with a League game against Muir at 5:15 p.m. Before the opening serve against Muir there will be a Senior Night pregame celebration honoring the class of 2025 with the festivities starting at 4:45 p.m. Crescenta Valley will also return to action on Tuesday, October 1 with a home game against Burbank, which will be their annual Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness showdown with the opening serve starting at 5:15 p.m.
