Glendale Community College are now winners of four straight after beating Pierce College Saturday morning, 54-20. It was the first time in Pierce’s history that they held a game at 10 a.m. The Vaqueros had come with plenty of momentum on their side, led by their carousel of running backs. Running Back DJ Cole had a big day on the ground with 165 yards rushing on 35 carries, including two rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Jackson Askins threw for 147 yards on 13-20 for two touchdowns and an interception.
In the opening two minutes of the game both defenses had a turnover. First Brahmas quarterback Maqel Henderson fumbled the ball after heavy pressure by the Vaqueros defense and recovered by Glendale. Three plays later Askins was intercepted by linebacker Caleb Williams. Brahmas scored on the ensuing drive on a 10-yard touchdown run by Henderson. But the Vaqueros answered right back after a two-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Askins. Tederrius Strow responded immediately for the Brahmas, returning the ensuing kickoff for a 85-yard touchdown. After a missed extra point, the Brahmas had a 13-7 lead.
It wasn’t until the second half where the Vaqueros, with a 20-13 halftime lead saw their run game and defense take over. The Vaqueros offense scored 13 straight before the Brahmas scored their final touchdown of the day to make the score 33-20 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the running game of the Vaqueros continued to punish the Brahmas defense. Glendale held on to the ball for more than 41 minutes, compared to the Brahmas nearly 17 minutes.
The Vaqueros defense had three interceptions and three forced fumbles, two of which were recovered for turnovers. Over seven players ran the ball for the Vaqueros. Among them, running back Andranik Saryan ran for 98 yards on eight carries. Wide receiver Shade Schaefer had seven receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown.
It was a tough day for the Brahmas offense with 226 total yards. Pierce College, now 3-3 on the season, will look to bounce back when they travel to take on undefeated Pasadena City College.
Glendale, who is 5-1, will be looking to get its fifth straight victory when they take on LA Valley at home on Saturday.
