Isabella Amayakyan scores a new season-high 15 points in the victory for the Lady Bears

Following a 2-3 record at the John Burroughs High School Girls Basketball West Coast Holiday Tournament, the Lady Bears began January off on the right foot by coming away with a 48-21 win over the Lakeview Charter Lady Lions. Burroughs was led by Isabella Amayakyan’s 15-point performance. The Lady Lions came off a 2-1 record at the Marshall Tournament with their two victories coming against Maywood Academy and Fremont.

Both Burroughs and Lakeview Charter traded baskets to begin the first quarter as Polina Gorgeriz and Evelin Quinonez both scored baskets for their respective teams to tie the game at two. The Lady Bears later on went on an 8-2 scoring run as Gorgeriz, Amayakyan, and Ella Anderson all chipped in offensive and helped Burroughs lead by six heading into the second quarter.

Burroughs continued to have control in a low-scoring second quarter and held Lakeview Charter to only one point. Gorgeriz, Alyssa Pracha, and Gabriella Buendia all contributed to the scoring for the Lady Bears which resulted in a 16-4 lead heading into intermission.

Both the Lady Bears and Lady Lions traded points to start the second half with Amayakyan and Quinonez scoring points back and forth to begin the third quarter. Amayakyan and Pracha each had a strong third quarter to help Burroughs lead 33-10 heading into the final quarter. Ella Anderson and Liliana Ward both traded off points to start the final quarter but eventually, Anderson scored two straight baskets to seal the game for Burroughs.

“Throughout this game, we were just working on our defense, which was the area of focus in the game today,” said Vikki Oganyan. Oganyan praised Amayakyan’s aggressiveness and intensity when asked about her new season-high 15-point performance as a freshman.

Burroughs improves to 10-6 on the season and Lakeview Charter falls to 6-5. Both teams will return to action tomorrow night as Lakeview Charter will play a doubleheader against Bishop Alemany and Kenndy with tip-off times at 11:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Burroughs will take on Sherman Oaks CES at 6:30 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
