Camarillo escapes with a 20-17 win over Burbank

Reynold Owings’ eight-goal performance helped the Scorpions to a narrow victory over the Bulldogs

The Burbank Bulldogs fell short to the Camarillo Scorpions 20-17, behind the eight-goal performance by Reynold Owings. Burbank entered the contest coming off a 15-8 win over La Canada back on Tuesday, October 19th. This was the season opener for Camarillo as they finished last season with an 18-7 overall record and 6-0 in Coastal Canyon League play. The Scorpions had an appearance in the CIF Southern Playoffs a season ago and lost to Damien 7-8 in the second round of the postseason.

Both the Bulldogs and Scorpions started the first quarter by trading goals. Owings got Camarillo off to a quick start with the game’s first goal, with Jack Babelyan helping Burbank tie the score at one with a goal of his own. Owings responded with his second goal of the game, and then Mac Barlow also scored to give the Scorpions a 3-1 lead. Owings scored two more goals to give the Scorpions a 5-1 lead. Daniel Gemdzhyan helped the Bulldogs close the gap to cut the Camarillo lead to 7-4. The Bulldogs ended the opening period trailing by three heading into the second quarter.

Reynold Owings scored his fifth goal of the contest to start the second quarter to give Camarillo an 8-4 lead. The Scorpions continued their control of the game throughout the second quarter and headed into the halftime break with a 13-7 lead over Burbank.

Following the halftime break, the Bulldogs clawed their way back into the contest with four straight goals by Jack Babelyan, AvVo Llangesyan, and Daniel Babelyan in hopes of Burbank turning the game upside down. Owings and Barlow then responded with back-to-back goals to get the Camarillo lead back to four. Anthony Gemszhyan then helped the Bulldogs get back within three with a goal of his own. The Bulldogs trailed 15-12 at the end of the third quarter.

Matthew Willard got the first score of the final quarter to give Camarillo a 16-12 lead, along with Gemeszhyan’s goal following Willard’s score to cut the Scorpion lead to 16-13. Burbank faced another uphill battle by trailing 19-13 at one point in the game until four straight goals by Daniel Gemedzhyan and AvVo Llangesyan helped the Bulldogs cut the deficit to two in an effort to complete a dramatic comeback. Owings ended Burbank’s comeback hopes with a goal for Camarillo as the Scorpions came away with a 20-17 win over the Bulldogs.

“I liked how we played offensively in the second half and stepped up our intensity. We could have played better defensively since we gave up too many easy opportunities in transition,” said Davo Arakelyan. Arakelyan praised AvVo Llangesyan for his efforts in the second but also said that everyone played a role in making adjustments in the second half.

Burbank falls to 1-2, and Camarillo starts the season 1-0. Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, August 26th, with Burbank playing a road contest at Flintridge Prep at 3:45 p.m. and Camarillo playing a road game at Malibu at 3:15 p.m.
