Burroughs survives a 12-6 win over La Canada

Karisma Mendez’s fourth quarter touchdown pass to Geneva Keifer along with Alyssa Pracha’s & Lillit Nazarian’s fourth quarter interception sealed the deal in the Bears narrow win over the Spartans

The John Burroughs Bears come out on top with a narrow 12-16 victory over the La Canada Spartans behind Karisma Mendez’s go-ahead fourth quarter touchdown pass to Geneva Keifer. Alyssa Paracha and Lillit Nazarian helped seal the win for the Bears, with an interception each in the decisive period. Last week Burroughs came off a shutout 24-0 loss to Notre Dame and La Canada came off a 26-12 loss to Wilson.

Sam Drobis intercepted Alyssa Pracha on the second play of the game in the opening quarter which helped set up the first points of the game for La Canada. Gretchen Louie converted on fourth down with a quarterback keeper touchdown to put the Spartans up on the board 6-0. Louie’s score was the only score of the opening quarter.

Both the Bears and Spartans had a quiet offensive second quarter, as the defensive battle for both teams continued, with the score remaining at 6-0 heading into the halftime break. Karisma Mendez tied the score at six with a third quarter touchdown pass to Geneva Keifer for a 5-yard score – the only one of the quarter.

On the third play of the fourth quarter Karisma Mendez found Keifer for another touchdown, this time it was an eight yard connection. Alyssa Pracha’s and Lillit Nazarian’s fourth quarter interceptions on Gretchene Louie sealed the Bears six-point win over the Spartans.

“Our defense has been playing lights out for the last couple weeks, we got interceptions when we needed it, we pulled flags when we needed a big defensive stop, but offensively I’ve been frustrated with the lack of moving the ball down field.” said Keith Knoop. Knoop also added that Karisma Mendez went out as a field general in the second half.

Burroughs improves to 4-7 and La Canada drops to 1-2. The John Burroughs Bears will take on the John Marshall Barristers on Wednesday, September 10th at 6:00 p.m. and La Canada will take on Ramona Convent on Saturday, September 13th at 10:00 a.m.
