Bears extend their win streak to 10 games




















The John Burroughs Bears extend their win streak to a season best 10 games after coming out on top over the Glendale Nitros in four sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-14, 25-8) behind the game-winning kill by Khloe Pavia.


Last season, Edwin Real recorded his 200th career coaching win when the Bears defeated the Nitros in four sets on Thursday, October 10th, 2024. Heading into the contest, Glendale came out on top with a four-set loss over Crescenta Valley last Thursday, while Burroughs came away with a sweeping win over Hoover last Wednesday.


Serafina Hamo played a part in the Nitros’ 6-2 scoring run by recording a kill to give Glendale an early lead in the first set. Though the Bears and Nitros were competitive for much of the first set, Khloe Pavia, Izabella Hansen and Lelila Lazaar helped put the game away to give Burroughs a 25-16 set win.



Harmony Cawit contributed four aces in the second set to give the Nitros a four point lead over the Bears. Both teams played down to the wire with Glendale coming away on the winning end in set two by the final of 25-23.



Andrea Slobig started off set three with back to back aces to give Burroughs a 2-0 lead. The Bears and Nitros were trading off points for the first half of the set until the Bears hit cruise control and took over the remainder of set three. Pavia recorded five kills to end the third set.



The Bears began the fourth set by going on a 6-1 scoring run with points by Lazaar, Pavia, Ameila Walsh, and Hansen. The Bears held the Nitros to eight points to seal the four set win.


“The kids have worked extremely hard at practice and everyone is getting along really well. I love how everyone is playing together as a team which is nice to see.” said Edwin Real. Real also added that when everyone plays well they have a good time doing it.


“Condsering the roster that I have now, I’m proud of the way they played but they still need to develop team chemistry.” said Artin Grigori. Grigori also added that it’s gonna take two developing years for Glendale to get back to playing at an elite level again.

Burroughs improves to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in Pacific League play with Glendale falling to 1-5 overall and in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Thursday September 11th. The Burroughs Bears will take on the Crescenta Valley Falcons. The Glendale Nitros will take on the Burbank Bulldogs at the dog house. Both games are scheduled to play at 3:45 p.m.
