Burroughs cruises by Marshall (Pasadena) 26-4

Bears’ 7-1 scoring run in the first quarter propelled them to a dominant victory over the Eagles

In a contest that featured two future Pacific League teams, the John Burroughs Bears came away with a dominant 26-4 win over the Thurgood Marshall Eagles behind a 7-1 scoring run for the Bears in the first quarter. Two weeks ago Burroughs came off a close 12-10 loss to Flintridge Prep, while Marshall came off a 12-21 loss to Pasadena back on Friday, September 5th.

Nicolas Laporta, Nicola Nasev, Kelly Roan and Daniel Mechaca began the opening quarter contribution to the scoring run for the Bears. The Eagles got two goals in the opening quarter by Jack Slattery and James Salians. Salians’s goal was scored at the end of period to make the score 7-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Burroughs continued to have control in the start of the second quarter with three straight goals by Laporta, Nasev, and Mechaca to give them a comfortable 10-2 lead. The offensive display continued on in the second period with Kelly Roan, Aaron Sotolongo, Niola Nasev, Serob Berberyan, and Liam Wamester all contributing to the Bears putting up 16 points by the halftime break.

The Eagles were held scoreless in the third quarter with the Bears scoring eight unanswered goals by Knack St. Pierre, Aaron Sotolongo, Daniel Menchaca, Liam Wamester, Serob Berberyan, Nicolas Laporta, Kelly Roan, and Landon Qiambao. Marshall continued to be held scoreless for the rest of the game with Daniel Menchaca and Nicola Nasev completing the scoring with the Bears’ two goals in the fourth quarter.

“I thought the boys played well after two weeks of no games, we still have things to work on like giving up easy opportunities that are uncalled for. Collectively everyone got great minutes to play and learn.” said Martin Ortega. Ortega also added that the team still needs to work on not allowing goals that could be preventable.

Burroughs improves to 2-2 and Marshall drops to 0-10. Marshall will take on Pasadena for a second of a back to back with Burroughs playing in the Thrill of the Hills Tournament beginning on Friday, September 12th and concluding on Saturday, September 12th. The Bears will take on the Birmingham Patriots and the Charter Oak Chargers on day one of the tournament. Burroughs will play Birmingham at 5:00 p.m. and Charter Oak at 7:00 p.m. on the first day of the Thrill of the Hills Tournament.
