Barristers second half explosion propelled them to a convincing win over the Bears

In a contest that featured a pair of four-win teams, the John Marshall Barristers held on late to come out on top with a 24-12 win over the John Burroughs Bears behind a second half explosion for the Barristers. Entering the Wednesday night football contest, Burroughs came off a narrow 12-6 win over La Canada back on Monday, with Marshall suffering a 25-6 loss to San Pedro last Wednesday September 3rd.

Both the Bears and Barristers were held scoreless in the first quarter as it was a defensive duel between the two squads. Marshall got on the board first in the second quarter with Jalyin Macias hitting Nora Askew for a 16 yard connection to give them a 6-0 lead. Macias then found Alexa Guerrero for a goal line touchdown pass to make the score 12-0. The Bears were able to get on the board before the end of the first half when Karisma Mendez connected with Geneva Keifer for an 18 yard touchdown pass to get them back into the contest. Marshall led 12-6 over Burroughs at the halftime break.

Jalyin Macias began the second half with another touchdown pass finding Lyric Calderon by converting on fourth down to give the Barristers an 18-6 lead. Alexa Guerrero then picked off Karisma Mendez by recording an interception return touchdown to put Marshall up by 18. The play of the day happened with time expiring at regulation as Alyssa Pracha took it to the house with a 74 yard quarterback run for a touchdown to end the game.

“Marshall played a very good football game tonight, this team had more opportunities to practice than we did. It seems like that when we play teams that have played flag football for two years we tend to struggle because Marshall has done it more than us.” said Keith Knoop. Knoop also added that Alyssa Pracha’s 74 yard touchdown run to end the game gave the team momentum heading into their second of the back to back with Los Altos.

Marshall improves to 5-4 and Burroughs drops to 4-8. Burroughs will take on Los Altos on the road in the second of a back to back at 4:15 p.m. Marshall will play against Banning on the road next Friday, September 19th at 7:00 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
