Burroughs begins Pacific League play by getting blown out by Pasadena 54-14

Delano King’s 100 yard interception return for a touchdown with time expiring in the fourth quarter sealed the dominant victory over the Bulldogs

It hasn’t been easy for the John Burroughs Bears to start the season as they began Pacific League play with a 54-14 loss to the reigning CIF Southern Section Division 13 Champion Pasadena Bulldogs. Pasadena was coming off a week two loss to Norwalk 42-34, while Burroughs suffered a blowout defeat to Los Altos back in week three.

The Bulldogs’ defense began the first quarter by forcing a three and out on the Bears offense, which set up the game’s first score. Dutch Burbidge found Sebastian Clark in the end zone for the game’s first touchdown, which was followed by a Edward Portillo’s missed extra point attempt to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead. Noah Ruiz recorded a blocked punt and the ball went out of bounds through the end zone, resulting in a safety to give Pasadena an eight point lead over Burroughs.

On the second play of the second quarter, Burbidge recorded a 16-yard run touchdown to give Pasadena a 14-0 lead. The Bulldogs were not done adding points on the board in the quarter, as Michael Ambrose recorded a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown off of Bears quarterback Sean Gahman to give Pasadena a 20-0 lead. Burbidge then found Kyle Robertson for a 69-yard connection, and followed that with a successful two-point conversion pass to Delano King to give the Bulldogs a 28-0 lead over the Bears heading into intermission.

The Bulldogs continued to run away with the contest to start the second half with Burbidge finding King for a 22-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 35-0. Burroughs finally got on the board with Sho Fujita recording a three-yard goal line touchdown run in hopes of sparking the Bears offense. Pasadena still led 35-7 heading into the final quarter.

Burbidge recorded his second rushing touchdown of the night by taking it to the end zone for a 17-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs a 41-7 lead over the Bears. Gahman recorded his first touchdown pass of the game when he connected with Brenden Smith in the end zone. Michael Hernandez successfully converted the extra point to make it a 41-14 game.

Pasadena added two more scores in the fourth quarter. First, Burbidge connected with Damari Pitts for a long touchdown connection and Kahsahan White recorded the point after try to extend the lead to 48-14. Later, King intercepted Gahman in front of the end zone and ran it back for a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown with time expiring in the fourth quarter to give Pasadena a 40-point victory over Burroughs.

“Any win is good, and I’m happy with it. We still have a bunch of things to clean up since they did not execute the way I expected them to.” said Ron Jones. Jones also added that he has nothing but love for both Jose Calzidella and the Burroughs coaching staff when asked about getting a win against the team he once worked for before taking the head coaching job at Pasadena High School.

“I got to do a better job coaching this team,” said Jose Calizadilla. “The kids are trying hard but we gotta come up with a better game plan against Arcadia next week.”. Calizadilla also added that Ron Jones has a way of doing things as the Pasadena head football coach, but returned the focus to himself in saying that he did not execute properly in the loss when asked about going up against his former colleague that was part of the Bears 2023 Pacific League Championship team.

Burroughs falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in Pacific League play with Pasadena improving to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action for week 5 of the season with the Burroughs Bears taking on the Arcadia Apaches on Thursday, September 25th at Arcadia High School at 7:00 p.m. with Pasadena taking on the Glendale Nitros in another road contest on Friday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m.
