Kelsey Vivas’ second quarter receiving touchdown and interception propelled the Bears to victory over the Pandas 

Following a 20-6 loss to Santa Monica last Tuesday, the John Burroughs Bears bounced back in a huge way with a 20-6 victory over the Immaculate Heart Pandas. Kelsey Vivas’ big second quarter, which included a receiving touchdown for 10 yards and an interception to end the first half, helped lead the Bears to the win. Immaculate Heart was coming off a 26-7 loss to Alemany back on Friday, September 19th entering the contest against Burroughs. 

Both the Bears and Pandas began the opening quarter with each defense forcing a three-and-out. The Bears defense then forced a turnover on downs, which resulted in the game’s first score for Burroughs. Karisma Mendez found Geneva Keifer for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Kayla Duran’s extra point try was successful to give the Bears an early seven point lead. 

Burroughs recorded two touchdowns in the second quarter. First, Mendez connected with Vivas for a 10-yard touchdown. Mendez then found Isabella Estrada for the extra point try in the end zone to increase the Burroughs lead to 14. Not only did Karisma Mendez throw for two touchdowns in the first half, quarter she recorded a quarterback keeper touchdown at the goal line to give Burroughs a 20-0 lead heading into the halftime break. 

The defenses stood tall again in the third quarter as the Bears and Pandas were both held to no points to start the second half. Immaculate Heart finally got on the board in the fourth quarter with Alana Scanlan finding Marissa Hale in the end zone to make it a 20-6 game, which was the only score of the second half for either side. 

Burroughs improves to 8-9 and Immaculate Heart falls to 2-9. Burroughs will take on Rialto in the first of a back-to-back at home on Wednesday, September 24th at 6:00 p.m. with Immaculate Heart will take on Chaminade on Thursday, September 25th at 4:30 p.m.
