Burbank comes away with a four set victory over Glendale

Bulldogs keep playoff hopes alive with back to back wins with Muir & Glendale

The Burbank Bulldogs now are on a two game winning streak after recording a huge win over the Glendale Nitros in four sets (25-17, 20-25, 25-6, 25-20) to keep their CIF Southern Section playoff hopes alive. Last Thursday, the Nitros came off a sweeping loss to the Burroughs Bears while the Bulldogs came away with a big sweeping victory over the Muir Mustangs.

Grace O’Connor’s service out of bounds gave Glendale the match’s first point, but Lorin Azizan and Anya Oganian recorded back to back kills to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead over the Nitros. Chloe Gallagher had three aces helping Burbank go on a 7-2 scoring run. Gallagher later recorded a fourth ace in set one to give Burbank a 22-17 lead. Madi Yosh and Oganian combined for a big block to help set up the opening set’s final two points. Emerson Chong and Madi Yosh recorded back-to-back kills to give the Bulldogs a 25-17 lead.

Rebecka Cruz began the second set by recording an ace. Cruz then had a net serve for the Bulldogs to tie the game at one with the Nitros. Regan Shchur and Madi Yosh then recorded back-to-back points to put Burbank up by three. Gabriella Jarrah, Chong, O’Connor and Lorin Azizan both attempted a rally for the Bulldogs when they were down 17-23 but the Nitros escaped with two more points to win the second set. Harmony Cawit ended the second set with a kill to give the Nitros a 25-20 set win.

Burbank began the third set by going on a 4-0 scoring run as Gabrielle Jarrah, and Sam Yosh both had points to jumpstart the offense. The scoring run ended when Emerson Chong had a net serve to put the Nitros on the board. Azizian, Gallagher, and Madi Yosh then had three consecutive points to put the Bulldogs up 7-1. Burbank had control of the contest throughout the third set and Chong combined with O’Connor to put it away with three straight points to give Burbank a 25-6 win over Glendale.

It was a back and forth battle for much of the fourth set. Gabrielle Jarrah hit the ball out of bounds on the serve for Glendale to get on the board first. Chong tied the score with a kill and Serafina Hamo responded with a kill of her own to give the Nitros a 2-1 lead. Burbank trailed 6-3 before Madi Yosh and Azizan found a way to get the Bulldogs back in the game to tie the score at 6. While it was a close fourth set for the most part, Burbank still found a way to put Glendale away to end the set. O’Connor, Madi Yosh, and Chong recorded three straight points to give the Bulldogs a 25-20 win over Glendale and a 3-1 match victory.

Burbank improves to 12-19 overall and 6-6 in Pacific League play which puts them within reach of fourth place Pasadena, who sits at 7-6. Glendale drops to 3-9 overall and in Pacific League play. Both teams will return to action on Thursday, October 9th. Burbank will host Crescenta Valley on Thursday, October 9th at 5:15 p.m. in their annual dig pink game. Glendale will take on Arcadia at home with the opening serve slated for 3:45 p.m.
