Karisma Mendez threw three first-half touchdown passes, and Alyssa Pracha added two fourth-quarter touchdowns via the air and on the ground in the Bears’ win over the Crusaders

The John Burroughs Bears come away with a shutout 33-0 win over the Village Christian Crusaders behind three first-half passing touchdowns by Karsima Mendez, along with two big touchdowns by Alyssa Pracha in the fourth quarter. Pracha found Hailey Bruns Franco through the air and then ran into the end zone from two yards out. In their recent games, Burroughs came off a 13-7 loss to Simi Valley, while Village Christian came off a 42-7 loss to Chaminade in the second of their back-to-back.

Before the game started, nine graduating seniors from the John Burroughs Bears’ first-ever girls’ flag football team were honored and celebrated with their family, friends, and loved ones. Those graduating seniors are Liczy Mercado (wide receiver, defensive back), Celeste Iniguez (wide receiver, linebacker), Nevaeh Diaz (wide receiver, linebacker), Alyssa Pracha (quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back), Lillit Nazarian (wide receiver, linebacker) Aurelia Theil (quarterback, wide receiver, defensive back), Karisma Mendez (quarterback, wide receiver, linebacker), Hailey Burns Franco (running back, defensive back) and Giovanna Martinez (center, linebacker).

“It was great to have the first-ever Burroughs girls’ flag football senior night, because we got to invite all our friends and family to help celebrate this special night,” said Alyssa Pracha. Pracha added that she’s super thrilled that her second senior night celebration will be with the Burroughs Lady Bears basketball team, a program she’s been playing for Coach Vikki since her sophomore year at Burroughs.

On the football field, both Burroughs and Village traded defensive stops. Following a forced three-and-out, the Bears’ offense had a fourth-down conversion on a run by Karisma Mendez, but their drive stalled in goal-to-go territory as the Crusaders’ defense stood tall, forcing a turnover on downs. On the ensuing drive, Pracha sacked Sophia Santos to force a turnover on downs and return the ball to the Bears. Karisma Mendez capitalized immediately when she found Krystal Vilalta for a 15-yard touchdown pass to get the Bears’ offense jump-started. Mendez then converted the one-point try to put Burroughs up 7-0 over Village Christian.

The Bears then recorded their second touchdown of the game in quarter two when Mendez and Geneva Keifer linked up for a 17-yard connection. The two connected again on the one point, try to increase the Bears’ lead to 14. Burrough was not done adding points in the second quarter, as Mendez found Vilalta for another score – this time for a nine-yard touchdown pass to put the Bears up by 20 at the halftime break.

It was a defensive showdown to start the second half, where both offenses were kept silent throughout the third quarter. Burroughs, however, added two more scores in the fourth quarter to put the icing on the cake. Pracha found Hailey Franco in the end zone for a touchdown pass before she hit Celeste Iniguez in the end zone on the one-point try to increase the Burroughs lead to 27. Pracha later recorded a two-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 33. Helen Rios intercepted Pracha in the end zone to make it an unsuccessful one-point try. The Bears’ defense continued to hold tight to seal the 33-point win over Village Christian.

“We put together a special senior offense and defense that consisted of all seniors throughout the game. They went out there and did a great job throughout the night,” said Keith Knoop. Knoop added that it was a fun night and that the senior night ceremony was well set up for them.

Burroughs improves to 9-12 and Village Christian drops to 1-6. Burroughs will take on San Dimas on Thursday, October 9th, at 4:00 p.m., with Village Christian taking on Notre Dame on Wednesday, October 8th, at 3:00 p.m.
