Justin Trigo records four goals in the Bears victory over the Cavaliers

The Burroughs Bears go 2-1 in scrimmage play after coming away with a 6-1 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers behind a four goal performance by Justin Trigo. The Bears came off a 4-1 loss to Schurr in the rain – also in scrimmage play back on Monday, November 17th. Last season the Cleveland Cavaliers finished with an 11-13-4 overall record and 1-8-1 in West Valley League play with Burroughs finishing last season with a 6-10-4 overall record and a 1-3-4 record in Pacific League play.

Justin Trigo got the scoring started for the Bears in the first half with the game’s first goal in the eight minute of play. Juan Gonzales missed a chance to tie the game in the 14th minute but Maurice Vargas came to the rescue to tie the game at one in the 15th minute of play. Trigo then recorded two more goals with the first coming in the 18th minute and the second in the 24th minute to help the Bears lead 3-1. Luis Medina and Neiman both missed opportunities at goal in the 22nd and 27th minutes respectively. Trigo missed a chance to get his fourth goal of the contest in the 35th minute. Burroughs entered the halftime break leading 3-1 over Cleveland.

Following the halftime break, Trigo scored his fourth goal of the match to give the Bears insurance in the 19th minute of play in the second half. Seven Elkin scored back-to-back goals in the 28th and 29th minute of play to increase the lead up to five. The Cavs offense went silent in the second half as Juan Gonzales missed his only chance at goal in the 11th minute of play.

“In the beginning we played with a lot of confidence but in our first scrimmage against Schurr we battled through the rainy weather but tonight this team showed that they can compete at a high level,” said Bears head coach Mark Martinez. Martinez also added he knows the qualities of a good player that Justin Trigo is when asked about his four goal performance.

“I’m still figuring out everyone’s strengths and weaknesses in each player and also seeing what formations they are comfortable with,” said Julio Chacon regarding his Cavaliers’ performance. Chacon added that every game is a learning experience and overcoming different obstacles when asked about playing both his goal keepers in Giovani Juarez and Alessandro Munica.

Both teams will begin their season with non-league play following the thanksgiving break. Burroughs will take on Birmingham on Wednesday, December 3rd at Memorial Field at 6:00 p.m. and Cleveland will take on Simi Valley on the road on Tuesday, December 2nd at 7:15 p.m.
