Jon Ong leads the Bulldogs with 18 points in the win over the Gladiators


In a thrilling basketball game between the Burbank Bulldogs and Marquez Gladiators, the Bulldogs came out victorious with a 57-46 win behind Jon Ong’s 18 point performance. Burbank entered the contest coming off a 84-63 win over Norco at the Heritage Christian Showcase over the weekend and Marquez came off a 65-30 win over Whittier last Monday.


Anthony Ford and Blake Finnigan traded baskets following the opening tipoff, but Cris Ong and Kaleb Walker then scored back-to-back layups to make it a 6-2 game. Jayden Tucker responded with a two-point basket to put Marquez within two. Jon Ong then scored on consecutive attempts to increase the Bulldog lead to eight. Burbank took control of the first quarter punctuated with Cris Ong nailing a three-point basket to beat the buzzer with the Bulldogs leading 21-6 heading into the second quarter.


To start the second quarter, Laron Lockhart and Elyjah Staples both missed their free throw attempts before Blake Finnigan scored the first bucket in the second quarter to give Burbank a 23-6 lead. The Bulldogs continued to have momentum throughout quarter two and led by 14 entering halftime.



The Gladiators then began the second half on a scoring run with baskets by Miguel Rodriguez, Staples and Tucker which resulted in cutting the Bulldog lead to four. Cris Ong and Giordan Lewis stopped Marquez’s scoring run with back-to-back points. Ong recorded a layup with Lewis converting both of his free throws. Tucker responded with a pair of two-point baskets to inch the Gladiators back to within four. Both teams were neck and neck throughout the third quarter with Burbank holding on to a five-point lead heading into the final quarter of play.



Staples and Tucker combined for Marquez to trim their deficit to one to start the fourth quarter with back-to-back two point baskets. Cris Ong then came through in the clutch with a layup to give Burbank a three point lead. Following the shot clock violation committed by the Gladiators, Finnigan and Staples traded baskets with Burbank holding onto a four-point lead. Jon Ong ended Marquez’s comeback hopes by nailing three straight free throw shots which completed the Bulldogs 11-point win over the Gladiators.



Burbank improves to 6-3 and Marquez drops to 2-4. Both teams will return to action on Friday, December 26th as Burbank will take on Los Altos at the Duarte/Temple City Boys Varsity Holiday Classic Tournament at 7:00 p.m. and Marquez will play Glendora at the Damien Classic at 8:00 p.m.
