Burbank splits crosstown basketball rivalry doubleheader with Burroughs

Lady Bears defeat Lady Bulldogs 76-42 & Burbank wins 69-50 in boys game

The Burbank Bulldogs and Burroughs Bears basketball teams split their Thursday night doubleheader in the first of two crosstown rivalry games this season. The Lady Bears crushed the Lady Bulldogs 76-42 and the Bulldogs came away with a convincing 69-50 win over the Bears. Jessica Mena led the Lady Bears with 13 points while Andrea Aparico & Manina Tuputupu combined for 26 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Cris Ong led Burbank with 22 points and Justin Herrera led Burroughs with 21 points in the boys contest.

The girls contest began the night between the Lady Burroughs Bears and the Lady Burbank Bulldogs. Burbank was fresh off a thrilling 64-56 win over Glendale in overtime with Burroughs coming off a dominating 63-33 win over Muir.

The teams began the first quarter by trading baskets. Isabella Amayakyan and Aparico scored layups for their respective teams to tie the game at two. Mena and Amayakyan both scored on consecutive possessions to make it a 7-2 game.

Aparico cut the Lady Bears’ lead to three but Valentina Morales recorded a basket to make it a 9-4 game. The Lady Bears controlled the first quarter and entered the second quarter leading 18-12.

Morales began the second quarter with an offensive put back and Tuputupu answered with a layup. The Lady Bears then went on an 8-0 scoring run with points by Amayakyan, Izzy Amoroso and Mena before Tuputupu scored again to end the run.

Aparico ended the first half with a buzzer beating two point shot with the Lady Bears still in control of the contest, holding a 36-18 lead over the Lady Bulldogs heading into the second half.

Amoroso and Morales began the second half with back-to-back points for Burroughs and Rhiley Ocampo hit a three-point basket to get Burbank on the board in the second half. The Lady Bears cruised through the second half to complete the 34 point win over their crosstown rivals.

Burroughs improves to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in Pacific League play, which puts them in second place alone following Arcadia’s 57-67 loss to Crescenta Valley. Burbank falls to 15-6 overall and 4-3 in Pacific League play.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday, January 17th. Burbank will take on Arcadia at 6:40 p.m. at Arcadia High School and Burroughs will host Pasadena at 5:15 p.m.

The boys game concluded the doubleheader in primetime. Burbank came off a dominant 84-56 win over Glendale and Burroughs came off a 65-46 loss to Muir in their most recent contests.

Kaleb Walker and Anthony Jawiche scored consecutive points to contribute to the Bulldogs’ 7-0 scoring run. Kane Le Cabico got the Bears on the board with a layup but Jawiche and Giordan Lewis increased the Bulldogs lead to nine. Burbank dominated the first quarter and entered the second quarter with a 24-11 lead.
