Knights eight run top of the fifth inning propelled Shadow Hills to a blowout victory over the Burroughs Bears


The Shadow Hills Knights took a mercy rule win over the John Burroughs Bears 11-1 behind an eight run top of the fifth inning highlighted with a bases clearing RBI Double from Cole Meka. Shadow Hills was fresh off a 6-9 loss to Palm Springs back on Thursday, April 2 as the the two teams split the two game series with the Knights taking the first game of the series by the final of 6-3 back on March 30.



Burroughs came off a 17-0 win over Hoover the day prior to complete the two-game sweep of the Tornados.


Theo Gara got into trouble in the top of the first inning by allowing a one-out single to Meka before allowing two-out walks to Jesse Rodriguez and Issac Munoz to load the bases. Gara worked around the bases loaded jam by getting Daniel Ceja on a ground out to second baseman Logan Drossin for the third out.


Elliott Ross and Slater Mersola were retired to start the bottom of the first inning with Ross striking out swinging and Mersola grounding out to second base. Devin Whittekiend reached base with a two-out walk, but Jack Smith popped out to third base to end the first inning. Both teams were held scoreless in the second inning as well before the Knights got on the board in the top of the third inning.


Daniel Ceja drove in the game’s first two runs with an RBI single to put Shadow Hills up 2-0 in the visiting half of the third inning.


Aaron Aguirre pitched a one-two three-inning to keep Burroughs at zero through three innings. Meka drove in Alfredo Avalos with a one-out RBI double to put the Knights up 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning. Thomas Martin drove home Devin Whittekeind to get the Bears within two as Martin reached first on an error charged to Nick Rodriguez. The Knights ran away with a parade of runs in the top of the fifth inning to complete the mercy rule win over the Bears.


“I thought it was humbling because everyone knows what a great team we are and why we come out everyday to work hard and get better.” said Matt Magallon. Magallon also added that the approach is day by day throughout a long season.


Burroughs falls to 12-3 and Shadow Hills improves to 6-8. Burroughs will take on La Canada on Wednesday April 8 at 6:30 p.m.
