Tartans escape with a two-run victory over the Bears

The John Burroughs Bears fell short against a very strong Glendora Tartans squad which saw Emma Garcia go the distance in the pitcher’s circle. Garcia limited the Bears to just one run while striking out two batters in the win.

The Tartans jumpstarted their offense in the top of the first inning as Morgan Gonzalez and Sienna Bobadilla recorded back-to-back doubles.

Ryan Torres drove in the game’s first run by grounding out to the pitcher Elliott Rendon with Gonzalez scoring from second base.

Kennedy Bowers put Glendora up 2-0 on the RBI sacrifice fly to right field to score Bobadilla from third. Elliot Rendon finally got out of a rough top of the first inning by getting Emma Garcia to pop out to third base.

Sophie Rangsiyawong started the home half with a groundout to third, but the Bears quickly got their offense started with three consecutive batters reaching base via one-out walks and hits from Haven Vickers, Karlee Earl and Kalani Miramontes.

Chloe Zavala and Sydney Shugar were unable to capitalize as both struck out to end the first inning.  Elliott Rendon recovered in the pitcher’s circle, retiring the side in order in the top of the second inning.

The Bears and Tartans were held scoreless for the next four innings until the Bears finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rangsiyawong kept the Bears alive with a two-out RBI single to put the Bears back within one. Haven Vickers had a chance to tie the game, but she grounded out to the pitcher Emma Garcia to end the sixth inning.

Garcia began the top of the seventh inning with a leadoff double, reaching scoring position as a potential insurance run for Glendora. Garcia scored after Chloe Zavala was unable to cleanly field the ball when attempting to get Kiely Coleman on a groundout. The error was charged to Zavala and then an unearned run was charged to Rendon to put the Tartans up 3-1.

Rendon left Coleman on base by getting Addison Bowers on a groundout to third and she forced Penny Dixon into a pop out and before getting Bobadilla on a fly out to center field to give the Bears one more shot at an epic rally.

Karlee Earl began the bottom of the seventh inning with a leadoff single on the first pitch and the Bears had hope. Kalani Miramontes, Chloe Zavala and Sydney Shugar all represented the tying run at the plate but all three failed to bring Earl home to end the game.

“I’m not disappointed in the loss at all,” said Doug Nicol. “This was a great midweek game for this team before we begin the second half of Pacific League play and I was proud of how everyone played but hats off to Glendora for making the clutch plays at the right time.” Nicol added that the offense could have done a bit better when asked about missed scoring opportunities.

Burroughs drops to 12-8 and Glendora improves to 14-1-2 on the season. Glendora will return to action with a doubleheader with Arleta and Chatsworth at the Village Christian Tournament at Alemany High School on Saturday, April 11 with game times scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Burroughs resumes Pacific League play with Hoover on Tuesday, April 14 at 3:45 p.m.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
