Elliott Ross hits the walk off RBI single to win it for the Bears

On Little League Night, the John Burroughs Bears defeated the St. Anthony Saints 4-3 in walk off fashion on a walk off RBI single from Elliott Ross.

Many local youth baseball teams from the Burbank Parks and Recreation departments were in attendance at the game tonight such as the Burbank Baseball Academy, the East Valley Baseball youth squad, the Toluca baseball team and the Burbank little league baseball and softball organizations.

The Saints jumpstarted the offense in the top of the first inning with Anthony Valdez coming around to score following his 1-out single. Valdez scored the opening run on an error charged to Slater Mersola. Luke DeGiorgio drove in Aidan Ruiz on an RBI single to put St Anthony up 2-0 early. Kayson Motngomery got out of a messy top of the first inning as Matt James grounded into a double play to end the visiting half of the first inning.

Devin Whittekiend reached base with a two-out walk, following strikeouts to Elliott Ross and Mersola. He was able to advance to second base on a wild pitch by Jaylen Butler to put him in scoring position. Jack Smith struck out swinging to leave Whittekiend stranded at second base to end the first inning.

Montgomery had to work around traffic once again in the top of the second inning following back-to-back singles to Nick Gallucio and Anthony Valdez. Montgomery got Adian Ruiz to fly out to center field to end the top half of the second. Jaylen Butler retired the side in order in the bottom of the second inning.

The Bears got on the board in the home half of the third inning when Mersola drove in Montgomery with a two-out RBI infield single to cut the deficit to 2-1. Whittekiend was unable to bring home the tying run, grounding out to second base to end the bottom of the third inning.

The Saints struck back in the top of the fourth with Anthony Valdez driving home Evan Canon to restore St Anthony’s two-run lead. Butler ended the top of the fourth inning by hitting into a double play. Marc James came in relief of Butler in the bottom of the fourth inning and held the Bears offense in check by retiring the side in order.

Elliott Ross got the Bears to within one run by driving home Zack Guevara with an RBI groundout. The Bears then tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jack Smith drove in pinch runner Nate Sepulveda with an RBI double.

Jake Rauenswider, Thomas Martin, and Guevara failed to bring home Smith in their at bats to end the sixth inning. Both the Bears and Saints were held scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings which set up an epic ninth inning for the Bears.

Nathan Bartolo retired the side in order to set up the winning plays for the Bears in the bottom of the ninth inning. Guevara reached base on an error charged to second baseman Nick Gallucio and represented the winning run on base.

Montgomery laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Guevara to second base. Logan Drossin flew out to right field for the second out of the inning. Elliott Ross drove in Guevara to winthe contest for the Bears.

“It was a great team win, our bullpen came through, our bats were a bit cold to start the game but we found a way.” said Ross. He also added that this is a team of guys that care about winning when talking about the walk off win over St. Anthony.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team, this team played well in a hostile environment on a Friday night and the guys played hungry throughout the night.” said Matt Magallon. Magallon also added that he was not shocked at Elliot Ross’s ability to deliver in key spots at the plate when discussing his walk-off RBI single in extra innings.

Burroughs improves to 14-4 overall and St. Anthony falls to 12-6-1. Burroughs will play a second of a back to back against Bell at 2:00 p.m. and St. Anthony will take on Cathedral at LA City College on Wednesday, April 15th at 5:00 p.m.

The Bears will resume Pacific League play with a critical two game series with the Arcadia Apaches as those games will take place on Tuesday, April 14th at Arcadia High School at 3:30PM and then again on Friday April 17th at 6:30 p.m at John Burroughs High School.

Not only the Arcadia series is crucial for the Bears next week, their two game series with the Crescenta Valley Falcons the following week will also be important as it will for sure decide the top three teams in the Pacific League standings.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
