The Burroughs Boys Basketball team will be searching for their fourth head coach in three years following Carter’s departure
After one season as the Head Coach of the John Burroughs Bears Boys Basketball program, Darryl Carter has decided to step away from his head basketball coaching duties at John Burroughs High School. Carter will now shift his focus to being the program director for both All in Elte and Mission City club basketball teams along with continuing his role as a one-on-one coach for One 20 Basketball training.
Before coming to Burroughs, Carter spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Crespi High School, which included coaching the frosh team and serving under three head coaches – Russell White, Andrew Moore, and five-time NBA Champion with the Los Angeles Lakers Derek Fisher.
This winter, Darryl Carter guided the Bears through the first season of what appears to be a lengthy rebuild, which resulted in a losing season. Burroughs finished with a 5-22 overall record and a 0-8 Pacific League record in Carter’s lone season as the head coach of the program for a last-place finish in a top-heavy Pacific League. The varsity roster this past season did not feature any seniors but did feature a heavy junior class and three underclassmen.
John Burroughs High School Principal Kenny Knoop released the following statement on Tuesday Night in an email to all the JBHS Boys basketball players coaches and parents regarding Darryl Carter’s resignation as the Head Coach of the Burroughs Bears Boys Basketball Program:
“I am emailing tonight to inform you that JBHS Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, Daryl Carter, has decided to step down from his position effective immediately. We are grateful for his contributions to our athletic program. We appreciate his service and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. A search for a new head coach will begin immediately and we will provide updates on the selection process as they become available.”
Both Kenny and Keith Knoop along with Jose Valle and members from the athletic administration teams, including Victor Ledesma (Burroughs High Assistant Principal of Athletics and Activities) will lead the search for the next head coach of the John Burroughs High School Boys Basketball team.
The next head coach of the program will have a big task to get Burroughs back to winning basketball, but it won’t be easy in a very deep Pacific League which runs through defending league champion Crescenta Valley, a powerhouse Pasadena squad, and a top-notch Arcadia squad. Burbank, Glendale, and Hoover should also be in the mix to round out the top four in the Pacific League or be an at-large team in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.
The Bears will spend the entire offseason doing spring conditioning and playing in spring and summer league games before tipping off the 2025-2026 season in November.
