It was not a great week for the teams at the top of the VST power rankings, as many of the top teams faced tough competition on the road last week. The Cavaliers move up a spot after a nice win at home, and a new squad enters the fray from the Valley Mission after a nice win on the road at Jefferson last week. Here are the ten teams that made the VST Power List this week:

  1. Birmingham Patriots (1-1) Last Week: #1
The Patriots ran into a tough St. Bonaventure team and came out on the losing end. Nevertheless, this team remains at the top of the rankings. The Pats hit the road to continue their early-season Southern Section gauntlet against Moorpark this week.
  2. Kennedy Cougars (1-1) Last Week: #2
The Cougars tasted defeat for the first time this season on the road at San Pedro, but that is nothing to hang their heads about. This team is still one of the best in the city. They will take on a Southern Section opponent in Canyon this week on the road.
  3. Granada Hills Highlanders (1-1) Last Week: #3
The Highlanders have a tough schedule to start the season, and they came up short against Venice on the road last week. The grind continues when they take on Palisades on the road in another top 15 matchup.
  4. El Camino Real Royals (1-1) Last Week: #4
The Royals gave a valiant effort, but it was not enough to take down Heritage last week. They will head back on the road to take on Grace Brethren this week.
  5. Cleveland Cavaliers (1-1) Last Week: #6
The Cavaliers showed they have a lot more in the cupboard offensively, putting up 70 points against an undermanned Arleta squad. The competition heats up when Crespi comes to play this week.
  6. Arleta Mustangs (1-1) Last Week: #5
The Mustangs are a beat-up bunch, but they showed a tremendous amount of heart against Cleveland on the road last week in a losing effort. They will look to get healthy against Taft this week.
  7. Panorama Pythons (2-0) Last Week: #7
The Pythons figured some things out about themselves in that run to the D-III championship last year. That momentum has clearly carried over to the start of this season. The Pythons have a good shot to get to 3-0 on the road at Fulton Prep this week.
  8. Taft Toreadors (2-0) Last Week: #8
It has been a couple of seasons of building at the Taft program, but the labor has begun to bear fruit. The Toreadors have a shot at their first 3-0 start since 2008 with a win over Arleta Friday night.
  9. San Fernando Tigers (2-0) Last Week: #9
The Tigers have already proven their toughness this season, winning two games in the span of six days to start the season 2-0. #-0 is a real possibility when they host Poly at home this week.
  10. Van Nuys Wolves (2-0) Last Week: NR
The Wolves continue to be a feel-good story as the program builds on the success from last season, which saw them play for a city title. A win over Roybal at home would give the Wolves their best start to a season since the 4-0 start by the 2011 squad that finished third in the Valley Mission.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
