Bulldogs move to a fourth-place tie with the Nitros in the Pacific League standings with the victory

The Burbank Bulldogs survive a three-point victory over the Glendale Nitros to put them in a fourth-place tie in the Pacific League standings. Burbank capped off a 1-3 record at the Buena tournament with a 10-5 win over Cathedral and a 7-8 loss to Long Beach Poly, with Glendale coming off wins over Sonora and West Covina this past Saturday.

Before the game, the Glendale Nitros varsity water polo team paid tribute to four graduating seniors in a pregame ceremony. Emil Mirzakhani, Zhan Davtyan, Vargas Hakobyan, and Jordan Rosner were celebrated for their time and achievements during the ceremony.

In the swimming pool, the Bulldogs started the first quarter with a 2-0 lead as Daniel Gemdzhyan recorded the game’s first two goals. The Nitros got on the board with Davtyan and Vardges Hakobyan with goals in response. Avo Ilangesyan increased the Bulldog lead to two while Hakobyan scored again to bring the Nitros back to within one. Burbank led 4-3 at the end of the opening quarter.

Ilangesyan began the second quarter with a penalty shot goal to put the Bulldogs back up by two. Davtyan had an opportunity to get the Nitros back within one but missed a penalty shot opportunity. Ilangesyan then scored another penalty shot to put Burbank up by three over Glendale. Daniel Babelyan and Michael Bakegyan both recorded back-to-back goals to help the Bulldogs lead 8-3 at the halftime break.

Following intermission, Bakegyan and Ilangesyan continued the scoring early in the third quarter with back-to-back goals. Alec Yeghikian and Alexander Tsereteli scored back-to-back goals for the Nitros to make it a 12-5 game. Jack Babelyan and Daniel Davtyan traded goals for their respective teams as the Bulldogs still led 12-6 through three quarters.

Yeghikian and Jack Babelyan started the final quarter scoring for their teams, keeping with the back-and-forth battle for most of the contest. The Nitros then put together a late rally with goals by Vardges Hakobyan, Daniel Davtyan on a penalty shot, and Zhan Davtyan. Illangesyan essentially put the icing on the cake with a goal to increase the lead to 14-10. Daniel Davtyan then scored another penalty shot goal to cut the Bulldog lead to three, but that was as close as Glendale would come in the final moments.

Quote of the week

I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
