Burbank comes out on top with a 52-43 win over Lancaster in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division Six Playoffs

Troy Wells’s three rushing touchdown performance propelled the Bulldogs to a high-scoring win.

In a contest that featured high-scoring offensive displays, the Burbank Bulldogs came out on top with a 52-43 win over the Lancaster Eagles behind three rushing touchdowns by Troy Wells. Both teams entered the playoffs by coming off their week 10 wins. Burbank had a convincing 62-14 win over crosstown rival Burroughs, while Lancaster came off a 47-6 win over Antelope Valley.

On the opening kickoff, the Eagles’ special teams recovered the onside kick to start the game and turned it into the game’s first score. Michael Marsenich found Jaheim Redmond for a 16-yard connection for the opening touchdown to make it a 6-0 game. DeShawn LaPorte came to the rescue for Burbank on the next drive, finding Tyler Hudson for a 34-yard score to make it a 7-6 game. Laporte then found Hudson again for a 12-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs the lead, 14-6. Marsenich responded for Lancaster, recording his second touchdown pass of the game by finding Jayson Wilson for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Jacob Walker converted the two-point conversion to get the game tied at 14, and that was the score as the first quarter came to a close.

The Bulldogs retook the lead with Elijah Pendleton taking it to the house for a 46-yard touchdown run, which put them up 21-14. Terrance Harper immediately ran back the ensuing kickoff for a 60-yard touchdown, which tied the score again at 21. Troy Wells recorded a 10-yard touchdown run in response to Harper’s kickoff return, and the Bulldogs retook the lead 27-21. Ryan Mendoza then kicked a 30-yard field goal to extend the lead to a nine-point advantage for the Bulldogs. Marsenich then found Chance Beorangie for a 45-yard strike, plus Joziah Davis converted the two-point attempt to make it a one-score game, 30-29.

The Eagles made a key defensive play before the half as a LaPorte pass was intercepted by Jacob Walker. Before the teams went into the locker room for intermission, Troy Wells of the Bulldogs and Lundon Dinkins of the Eagles both were trash-talking, which resulted in both of them receiving unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Those flags were offsetting fouls, and Burbank started the second half kickoff to Lancaster on the 50-yard line.

On the first play of the second half, Arthur Turner thought he began the third quarter with a 66-yard offensive run, but a holding call wiped out the score, resulting in a 10-yard penalty for the Eagles. The Lancaster bench then committed a sideline violation, which resulted in a 15-yard penalty. The Bulldog defense then forced the Eagles offense into mistakes when Diego Placarte intercepted Marsenich and returned it for 13 yards to set up the first score of the second half.

Troy Wells recorded his second rushing touchdown of the game, along with LaPorte finding Exodus Freeman in the end zone for the two-point conversion to push the Bulldogs’ lead to 38-29. Laporte then found Tyler Hudson for a third score, this time a 21-yard touchdown pass. Turner broke one that counted when he took it to the house for a 52-yard touchdown run, which made it a 45-35 game. Matt Winn recovered the onside kick following the Eagles’ score, and Burbank entered the fourth quarter leading by 10.

Both teams each recorded one touchdown in the final quarter. Wells recorded his third rushing touchdown of the game on a two-yard run, and Marsenich took it in on an eight-yard quarterback keeper. The Eagles’ special teams recovered the onside kick in hopes of the offense getting back into the game. Marsenich threw an interception to Diego Placarte, and the Bulldogs’ offense ran the clock down to complete the 52-43 win over the Eagles.

The Burbank Bulldogs will take on Eleanor Roosevelt High School in the CIF Southern Section Division 6 Quarterfinals on Friday, November 14th, at 7:00 p.m. The Lancaster Eagles football season is officially in the books.
