Burbank begins Pacific League play with a 3-1 win over Arcadia

Sophia Leon’s and Jocelyn Morinaga’s first half goals propelled the Bulldogs to a victory over the Apaches

The Burbank Bulldogs made a statement to start Pacific League play by coming out on top with a 3-1 win over the reigning league champion Arcadia Apaches behind two first half goals by Sophia Leon and Jocelyn Morinaga. Burbank entered this contest following a 5-0 loss over Temple City three days ago while Arcadia came off a 2-2 draw to Monrovia in their season opener.

Sophia Leon and Jocelyn Morinaga gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead in the first half with their respective goals. Leon scored early, with hers coming in the 7th minute of play and Morinaga scored late, finding the back of the net in the 24th minute. Marcela Lugo had a chance at goal to put the Apaches on the board in the 14th minute of play. The Bulldogs ended the first half being up by two at intermission.

Morinaga missed goal chances to start the second half in the 2nd and 6th minutes of play. Allison Rubio gave the Bulldogs an insurance goal with her 11th minute strike coming on an assist by Morinaga to increase the Bulldogs lead to three. Lugo put Arcadia on the board with a goal before regulation ended and the Bulldogs took their 2-goal victory. Karine Gaddyan recorded five saves as finished just short of recording a shutout for the Bulldogs, while Athena Mack recorded three saves and allowed three goals in the loss for the Apaches.

“Arcadia has been a great team in this league for a long time, but for us to beat them to start off the real season was outstanding.” said Dennis Leon. Leon also added that the girls were locked in and showed great focus in the win over Arcadia.

Burbank improves to 4-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in Pacific League play with Arcadia dropping to 0-1-1 overall and 0-1-0 in Pacific League play. Arcadia will return to action on Monday, December 8th against Temple City with kickoff scheduled for 3:45 p.m. and Burbank will take on Blair on Tuesday, December 9th at 3:30 p.m.
